Might bite the bullet and get a data plan. Is it slow?

Well. Most 3G CDMA networks aren't known to be particulaly fast. Good for google, Facebook and twitter? Sure. Netflix and video calls? Probably not.

if it is slow, what reasons would there be that cause it to be slow?

Verizon's 3G network is EVDO rev A. It's theoretical max speed is probably about 3Mbps, but real world is much less than that. It does not compare to 3G on ATT/T-mobile (HSPA+ 21Mbps). ATT/T-mobile spent money upgrading the 3G networks. Verizon just left it as-is and went all in on LTE. I would expect less than 1 Mbps.

Its just the phone that I already have. Looks like I won't bother with 3g

If you're not locked to Verizon, T-mobile or ATT work great in the NYC area so you can have the pick of the litter.

GSM Moto G is like 80-110. Verizon's is cheaper, but I think it only works with Verizon Prepaid.
