How's the Disgaea series?

I recently d/led a tactical RPG for iOS (which is surprisingly pretty decent) and it got me kind of itching to play some better tactical RPGs for consoles.

I've never played any games from the Disgaea series but they seem to be pretty popular. Amazon has some of the titles for PS3 for around $20 which seems to be a good value for a game that could provide well over 100+ hours.

I've played Final Fantasy Tactics (War of the lions), FFTA, FFTA2, and Jeanne D'Arc. Will I enjoy a game from the Disgaea series?

Also, since it looks like Disgaea 3 and 4 are on PS3, will I lose anything story wise or game play wise if I didn't play 1 or 2? Are they all independent stories?

Nice. So if I were to get one for PS3, would you recommend 3 or 4?

There's not really a lot separating the Disgaea series. Gamplay has hardly changed at all since 2. I'd probably recommend 4 since it's the newest one and finally features updated graphics. 3 is best on the Vita. Come to think of it, I really do prefer Disgaea as a mobile game.

I like the series but must admit its pretty silly, in fact down right juvenile. The combat is good, but can be a bit repatiative in the early going, easy battles but long setup/movement stages. I have not played 4, but 3 on the PS3 is like playing a PSone game.. I wont lie, i felt let down they didn't "upgrade" the graphics some for the PS3.. Solid tactics game, silly in between conversations.

I played the first game on the PS2 several years ago. It can potentially involve a ton of grinding but it is also fun.

I mean, you could theoretically build some ridiculous team with all the character classes and moves that you want, all leveled up to a high level, and all with high-level items, but you could spend thousands of hours doing that and still not be done. The normal story mode doesn't require that at all though. I mean, the level cap is 9,999 but I think my highest level character was around 130 when I beat the story mode. They throw in a bunch of other super high level characters for you to fight if you want.

Lol. It would take years of grinding to get anywhere near the level cap. Characters gain EXP at a slow rate. One thing I never liked about Disgaea is characters only level up if they defeat an enemy. So even if you have four participate in the battle, only the one that kills the enemy gets EXP. Even if it's just a matter of 1HP. Japanese RPGs really love to make your earn your rewards. Sometime to their detriment.

I guess if you grind it out in the item world, maybe some folks can get their levels up really high.

After reading this thread and remembering that I got Disgaea 3 for Vita for free (thanks PS+! 😛), I decided to give it a shot last night. I didn't play for long, but it felt a lot like a shounen (boy or young male) anime game, which would explain the juvenile comments I saw above. I don't think that's a bad thing as I watch some shounen anime to begin with.

honestly one of the best tactic games ever besides vandal hearts 1 this game will make you loose friends lol so addictive

I loved the Disgaea series... my only real complaint is that it's got a very grind-y feel like a lot of JRPG's (especially from the SNES/PS1 era) where you've really got to slog out and just grind out levels to evolve the advanced classes (and like most tactical games, it annoys me that XP isn't distributed to the entire team; makes the grind worse when you're trying to level a healer)
