so, the tv doldrums are officially here, and I'm out of anything to watch after work (or on boring afternoons at home alone while playing video games)... it has me thinking about re-subscribing to Netflix Instant, but I'm curious as to how the content has changed in the past year or so since I cancelled.

Just finished watching Lilyhammer, the exclusive Netflix show starring Steven van Zandt. My family like it a lot.

For me, there's always stuff to watch on Netflix streaming fwiw.

A lot was lost when Starz pulled their content, but there is still plenty to keep me and my family busy. The kids love it for cartoons and such, and I watch a lot of TV programs. Currently working through all the episodes of Star Trek NG.

But overall, I would say it was better 1 year ago. :(

Check out instantwatcher for a general idea of what they have to offer right now.

It has pretty good content for the price. I do the streaming only plan so for $8 if I watch a couple movies it is still cheaper than renting. i like some of the documentaries too, just watched one about wind power and some of the downsides to having it near your property. I never would have come across documentaries like that without netflix.

only watch it for a few foreign films and the documentaries. otherwise, i'm hard pressed to find anything interesting on there.

I find a lot of documentaries and shows and a few movies I like. It's not perfect - they lost a lot of content over a few months - but it's still better than it was a few years ago.

I updated my list in the other Netflix thread.

I find quite a bit to watch. I dropped my Comcast a year ago so I'm saving $100 a month there by waiting for shows to reach streaming or disc.

I use Amazon's instant video store to buy an episode or two when I decide not to wait, but I'm at least $1,000 ahead for the year even doing that.

Depends. Sometimes you can get a series like sons anarchy or whatever and it's worth the month right there.

I have a love/hate with netflix, because 97% (literally) of the stuff on instant is just total crap, but there is some good stuff. I'm watching Sherlock now and it's surprisingly good.

97%, really? Do you ever stop to consider that maybe there are other humans who have different tastes than you?

And what the hell does it matter if it's offered? You can just, you know, not watch it.

Netflix instant is not anywhere near as good for movies as it once was, but there is an almost limitless amount of material on there that I want to watch. And it doesn't all show up through your PS3 or TV, you have to go to the website or instantwatcher.com.

97% seems a bit high. I'd estimate that the crap to good stuff on Netflix instant is closer to 95.356%, plus or minus .0003%. :)

Oh, and instant still sucks if you're looking for recent movie releases or basically any recent TV series release from HBO, Starz, or Showtime. You still need a disc subscription for those, but even those titles take longer to be available now.

Sadly, that's what the networks demand. The only way to legally stream recent shows without a cable subscription is to buy them at $2 an episode.

And even when I was paying $100 a month for Comcast only some shows were available in On Demand streaming, many were not.

I was in the same boat as you and resubscribed a couple months ago. I'd say I get use out of it every few days, but it can be a stretch to find things to watch. I'm kind of a film buff though so maybe it is because I've already seen everything, and need more access to the newest releases.

If I had cable I think Netflix would be mostly useless. As it stands it has enough competition with free streaming TV (i.e. NBC, Comedy Central, TBS, offering streams of their new shows the day after). I might switch to the DVD plan soon.
