How's my job?

Hey guys, this is inspired from EKKC's thread about his job options. Allright here's the deal.
I'm an entry level (fresh out of college) computer forensic consultant and I work in Time Square but I commute out of jersey. I make about 50k a year pre tax fixed (there's a sort of overtime but I have to basically pull in like 35+ hours a week billable time). The one sweet part about it is the perks. Everytime we travel, everything is costed, and I mean EVERYTHING (flight, hotel, food, drinks 🙂 ) but I don't think that's so different than other consulting companies. It isn't bad for entry level but I really don't know too many other consultants to compare it to so i'm wondering how i'm doing to start off. Any consultants (preferrable technical related) have any insight? opinions?

What does a forensic coonsultant do? I mean I understand the gist of it from the title, but what is it exactly? Is there actually a major fo rthat?

What exactly are you asking? $50k straight out of college rocks. Is there a question here? You are good to go. I approve.

To answer your first question forensic consulting is a couple things. We basically get clients (usually big companies) that are involved in litigation. Our job is to go in and do the electronic data discovery (image client's HD's recover emails, recover documents, deleted docs from said drive), sort and filter the data to the constraints of the litigation and then present it to the client in a meaningful manner (read: for people who are not computer literate). If you've ever seen CSI, we're kinda like those computer nerds who do the hardware/data recovery and those nifty computerized presentations in the courts. It's a lot more involved but that's the basics. We strictly deal with corporate/financials stuff, not drugs or child porn (like the DEA). Some colleges are starting to have a major for this but i'm a computer engineer.

My question is whether i'm gettin paid well starting off for this type of work. As I said, I don't know too many technical consultants (1 of my friends got hired by accenture and is makin 59k starting 🙁 ). My primary concern is that a lot of people mention starting bonuses. I never got an offer for one. I primarily picked this job because it was interesting and there's a lot of travel involved.

yeah, you're doing great for a college grad. don't compare yourself to others. if i did, i'd be very unhappy right now. however, on the contrary, i enjoy what i do and don't mind that i'm not making a ridiculous amount of money. i'm gaining great experience, and if i were to look for another job, i'll have a lot of new experience under my belt.
