How's it's like working at CompUSA?

So... basically.. I just ended my career at Circuit City, worked there for over a year and a half... and now I definately need a new job, was thinking about applying at CompUSA.. not sure of what position. Has anyone here ever worked there? Anything I should know, or is it a decent place at all? Also, aren't there a lot of different positions there? I was in sales at CC, so I could do just about anything on the floor - but what sounds killer to me is to get a tech position, where I don't have to deal with asshole customers all day. Thanks for any advice, guys..

It makes you better than everyone on AT, and the smartest person when it comes to hardware. Plus you'll see the light and understand why Intel is the only good product maker.

As far as I can tell, if your IQ is higher than room temperature, you will not be working at CompUSA. If it's mid-sixties, you may be overqualified.

You sound perfect for the staff at every Compusa I've been too. You might want to consider Fry's also, I hesitate only in that if you know enough about computers to get online, find Anandtech, create and account, and post multiple times, they may think your WAY over qualified

I got turned down at CompUSA cause I was over qualified.. and all I put on my resume was I took a few computer classes in high school.

Retail in general is going to suck no matter where you work. I worked at a big electronics store here in Colorado until I could grab a real job. Retail is fine while you are going to school or trying to get a trade skill where you can actually earn a real living, but honestly, one retail joint is going to be pretty similar to any other one.

1) Little opportunity for advancement... even if you became a manager, who the hell would want to put up with every little customer hassle that occurs.. if you want that kind of pressure you should become a stock trader.

4) Working for the public sucks... sorry, it's true. For every nice customer that I worked with I had to work with 2 or 3 that were big time pain in the ass. Typically the ones that are the hardest to work with are the ones that have never worked with the public (sales, waiting tables, retail, whatever) in their lives and expect to be waited on hand and foot.

I worked for CrapUSA for 2 years and left. Don't bother working there if you want to stay long. 2 years ago I predicted that that company would be going out of business in 5-6 years and so far It looks like I'm right on. My friend that still works there told me that they fired some of the part time peole and moved the work week to 35 or 36 hrs a week. Jesus, when I worked there 40hrs a week we were still short handed, now they get rid of people AND cut back hrs.

The only good thing about working there is discounts on some things, getting to "acquire" software before its release date, and freebie from vendors and developers. I got a K6-2 and motherboard from AMD, and I also got a MS sidewinder freestyle game pad from microsoft along with all of my OS's. I got free NFRs from M$ that include Win98, Win98se, WinME, WinNT4.0, Win2k and 2 Office 2000 premiums.

I worked retail in various forms right out of high school, for damn near 10 years. My opinion is that theyre pretty much all alike. SH|T. Id rather jump off a bridge then work retail again.

what exactly do you think the difference between working at CompUSA and circuit city will be.
They stock different kinds of stuff, but their basically the same kind of company.

Haha, well, first let me say that I am a High School student.. senior actually.. so I wouldn't keep any job past this summer anyways.

And on to CC vs. CompUSA, well, I didn't so much leave my job voluntarily as I was fired. But I was told I'd get a good ref, so I figure another like store is about my best chance for some cash nowadays..
