I agree, Memento is probably one of the best movies I've seen - EVER

what, have you seen like 4 movies in your whole life or something?

Memento is an excellent movie.

Really weird and hard to follow the first time through true, but it's still great. Very original and a neat storyline to boot.

I personally don't care what wins in the Academy Awards, but I continue to be amazed that anyone could, with a straight face, argue that LOTR deserves to win Best Picture, or indeed any category related to writing or acting - I found it sorely lacking on both parts. I guess if you are a Tolkien/fantasy afficionado it has things to offer, but I found it amazingly ponderous. I can think of several films in 2001 that I found much fresher, better-written, and better-acted (Memento, Sexy Beast, A Beautiful Mind, and The Royal Tenenbaums are some examples).

For some reason when I think about the Oscars, I keep on thinking about "The First Annual Montgomery Burns Award For Outstanding Achievement In The Field Of Excellence" :D.

Yep, Oscars are a sham. Like I commented on the other thread, loTR didn't really win because it was not a Hollywood movie, and the Academy wanted to tell the world that best movies are still made in Hollywood.

ABM was probalby better in acting.

LOTR didn't have particularly outstanding acting.

But the writing? It was excellently written...have you read the books?

Of all the book to movie translations I've seen it is done the best compared to the books.

I read the books years ago and loved them as a child. I still found the script really ininspired. I did not get to know, or care about any of the characters, and the minor efforts to modernize the dialogue came off as really corny and forced to me (e.g., "You never toss a dwarf!").

Do you really think it is a better book-to-film adaptation than The Godfather? To each his own, I guess . . .

The no one tosses a dwarf line was a little weak. But you aren't suppose to get to know or love the characters. Tolkien doesn't have strong individual characters. That's not how he writes.

If you want strong character development read George RR Martin.

Tolkein work has races, and history and epic story line. Any individual character isn't that important in his work. Even Gandalf has a pretty thin character. That's just the way his characters are written.

But he has an enitre history for the elven race of his world for example.

If the characters were taking a forefront in the story it woudln't match the books as well.

I didn't know the Godfather was a book.

As a rule I try to avoid arguing over movies (everyone has their own tastes and that's fine). But I am curious about your description of ABM--of all the films this past year that is practically the *last* one I would ever describe as "fresh". What makes you say that?

Yeah...that soundtrack is awesome.

I use it for background music when I'm GMing for D&D. It's great when the Balrog music comes on just as the major villians make their entrance ;)
