How Young is Too Young To Play Violent Video Games?

Just got off a Day of Defeat server where some dude was letting his 10 yr old kid play. I dunno but that kinda troubles me, yeah there was a no vulgar language policy. In the 10 minutes I was on there 4 different people were screaming obscenities, mix that with an inherently violent game. No wonder our society/morals are going down the toilet. How about teaching your kid to pick up a book, play sports, something that utilizes your imagination.

I think perhaps the age of 15 is reasonble enough to let them play violent games like GTA? My nephew who is 4 years old wanted to play my GTA:SA and I had to take it away from him and tell him no because of its violence level.
 
And you don't think there are vulgar languages in sport? Man, that's where i learned all the cuss words when i was little.

 
Well, most games like that have a rating that states that they shouldn't be played by children younger than 13. If you are going to let your children play those games, I think 14 is an appropriate age to start letting them.

I played doom when I was 6 and duke nukem when I was 8. Now I'm an immoral psychopath.

edit: And i'm sure he'll hear every single cuss word by the time he's 9 years old.
 
How do you know that this child was 10 years old? Maybe he was 42 years old and he got a hard on telling everyone that he was 10.
 
hmmm... "better playing video games than doing drugs" was my mom's saying.

i have been playing since i was 6... but back then we didnt have games we do now. i guess... if i had a kid i would make sure he played games his age, but then again... i may let him play gta, i really dont know...

good thing i dont have to make decisions like this atm...

Video games have (almost) nothing to do with our society or morals.
Parents who don't know how to bring up their children properly would worry me much more.
 
it depends on the children, and the context of said violence. i never let mine play violent video games(other than fighting games), but ill let them watch me play some games, sometimes. they like to watch me play call of duty, but i make sure to let them know the backstory of ww2, and not that its just senseless killing.

ive been playing fable lately, and they love to watch that. of course, my 7yo son wants me to kill everyone i see.:evil: i think thats natural tho. same premise as cowboys and indians or cops and robbers. id never let them watch or play something along the lines of GTA tho. while they know that there is a distinct difference between right and wrong and video games, games like those are just too mature and explicit.
 
i am 12 and i play those games? so what? i am not psychopath. i am not addicted to killing. its just plain fun, and all the people i know in my school, plays those games too and even tho adults won't let us play it sometimes we can always so to a game shop like ebgames or bestbuy and play demos.
