How you can tell the local police dept. needs more money.

Earlier this week:
There was a busy signal where people would turn into the suicide lane leading upto the left turn lane so they're not blocking through traffic. There was nowhere else to turn at the point where people were doing this. They were writing people up for doing that.

Yesterday:
Blocked off a major thoroughfare during rush hour for a random DRIVERS LICENSE CHECK.

A few weeks ago I saw a cop that looked like he was writing up a ticket for two teenagers on gas powered stand up scooters.

how do they make money off of that? if you don't have your license all you have to do is take it to the station within a certain amount of time, right?

Someone should tell them that speeding tickets are a better way to go, since EVERYONE speeds, and it doesn't clog up traffic (as much) to pull people over on the highway.

How much of the money from the tickets goes to the police department?
IE: 10%, 50%, 100%.

If they issue a "city" ticket instead of a state ticket, I think all of it.

all of the correctional tickets i've gotten require you to pay a $10 or so court processing fee along with the proof of correction

Yeah, everybody thinks that!
Actually, the PDs get ZERO, ZILCH, SQUAT!

The actual fine goes to the state, the court costs are kept by the city/county.
At least here in KY.

By catching unlicensed drivers, drivers with suspended licenses, that sort of thing.

The PD doesn't get the money from the tickets, they get it from the city. The city gets the money from the tickets. How do you get more money? Make the city's budget bigger by issuing more tickets. The city council isn't going to complain. Just ask the fine folks in Waldo, FL and New Rome.

ah, didn't think of that but how many do you think they'd catch? my guess would be extremely few or none. not worth the time and hassle.

A coworker saw atleast 8 people at once in a parking lot being written up for one thing or another when he went by.

I think there is a good amount of people who drive with "bad" licenses or no licenses at all. Atlease this catches underaged drivers, repeat offenders, and illegal immigrants. To me it is a great idea and would love to see many an increase in these types of traffic stops.

It's a conveinient excuse to stop people. They are looking for illegal activity.

But a major road during rush hour?

By major, I mean two lanes each direction with turn lane in the middle. Traffic was backed up atleast three blocks.

They always find other things to ticket people for at checkpoints, such as expired motor vehicle inspection stickers.

What about people's constitutional rights? How about that little thing about unreasonable search and seizure?

Unlike stopping burglers and shoplifters where the police are going after people who they suspect have committed a crime, in this case they're going after the populace in general, the vast majority of which are not suspected of doing anything wrong. Yet the people are being forced to prove their innocence in a land where you're supposed to be innocent until proven guilty.

My local cops don't even make it that complicated. They send out mailings asking for donations to the Fraternal Order of Police.

I almost considered it, until I found out they endorsed W in 2004.

I had a ticket for no proof of insurance in Decatur, IL and had no fine at all. Just drove back down from Chicago and showed them the card (my dad forgot to put the new card in the car). Also had a traffic ticket in suburban Cook County, IL and it was dismissed, no court fees at all. I believe they charge the court fees only if you plead or are found guilty.

The FOP is a private organization. No government agency would benefit from them getting funding.
