from the writer's room to the board room and finally into the ring.

"The hardcore fans cringe when we say this. But the reality of it is, the story is the magic...and the truth is, though all of our storylines have to end up back in the ring and the wrestling part has to deliver to the point fans say, 'That was awesome, what a payoff,' we're not boxing. ... It's about characters and their relationship. That's a storyline. We are more like the Rocky movie than we are like a sport. The storylines are what's important."

To a point, I agree. Wrestling is a competitive sport so much as it is a reality show. It is a bunch of larger than life guys, playing the roles of larger than life wrestlers doing all kinds of crazy stuff. It takes talent to work a crowd and skill to perform moves without sustaining injury (because, they aren't trying to hurt each other), but it still isn't a sporting event. It is an entertainment event. It is a giant, elaborate on-going play.

It is widely known that Hogan always had in his contract he had final say on his matches and storylines. He was notorious for never allowing himself to have a clean lose, as in nobody would 'legitimately' defeat him; there was always some kind of interference or DQ or something.

Lemme guess. They pick the guy who fits into a storyline some writer came up with that they think will ultimately net the most ratings. That guy could be picked to win or lose depending on the circumstances though.

For instance they could be setting him up to be the protagonist in an epic struggle against another "unstoppable killing machine" who absolutely destroys everyone he gets in the ring with. In that case the wrestler they want you rooting for could be set up to lose a few intermediate fights because he is a more "honorable" fighter, who sticks to the rules while others cheat. This makes him seem both human and heroic and presumably causes the viewer to hope that he wins his fights.

Things like a past rivalry where the unstoppable fighter defeated the protagonist fighter in the first fight of his career can be thrown in and constantly alluded to in order to remind viewers that there is a larger story to the fight happening in front of them. This should lead to steadily higher ratings as the final meeting between the two fighters approaches.

In that final meeting the "good guy" could still lose if the writers want to string things out for another round. Maybe they add in a storyline where he gets mentored by an older retired wrestler in the off season, comes back rejuvenated, and tears through bad guy wrestler's posse on his way to an epic rematch. Of course if the whole affair never generates much fan interest you can probably expect it to fade away without much fanfare.

I'd probably rather watch Warrior over an over again instead though.

After reading that, if it is indeed true, the way the handled the Daniel Bryan storyline was fucking genius at the start and they almost mishandled it.

agreed.

i wonder if true. because they sure seemed like they had no idea (and still don't)

I missed the days when the WWF was real. Shoo....let me hit you with a chair and see if it hurts?

Curious if there is actual heat between Triple H and Vince, as the dirt sheets have been reporting that as of late. Newly introduced tag team 'Ascension' (Road Warrior rip-offs) are typically what Vince loves to push to the top - huge dudes built like Ultimate Warrior that seldom have good mic skills (see Roman Reigns for yet another example of a Vince push).

First match featuring Ascension, JBL tore their gimmick apart, when he should have been promoting them. He then proceeded to get involved in an Ascension beat-down the following week featuring several WWE legend tag teams. I wouldn't be surprised if Triple H didn't alter Vince's push with a good and proper burying.

You have it backwards. The Ascension are NXT guys which makes it more likely that they're Triple H guys. They get promoted to the main roster and buried like most every NXT star who's not Rollins, Reigns or Wyatt. That has Vince's signature of "fucking millennials not being able to reach the brass ring" written all over it.

As for the link in the OP's post, there's no way the part about WWE considering Bryan an "A+ player" from the beginning is true considering Bryan himself has refuted it, indicating that he wasn't supposed to main event WM30. This is basically WWE trying to rewrite history to fit their narrative and not make acknowledge their vast creative fuckups and how out of touch they are.

I don't follow WWE, but I read the article. And it's so reeks of sleezery. It talks about Wrestlemania and how everything magicvally worked out, because CM Punk suddenly left, leaving Bryan to fill the gap. The interesting question was why would anyone leave $$$ - Wrestlemania? I googled, and the answer was more interesting than this fake article.

Yeah NXT is HHH's baby. though from what i hear NXT is 10x better then WWE.

I don't buy that it was all planned. It didn't make since considering DB was going to join the Bray family etc. just to many lost chances to make a buck.
