So, we are in the process of upgrading our office computers from ancient Siemens PII-400 machines running Win98 to fancy new DELL machines running WinXP PRO. About half of the machines have been replaced successfully thus far (4) and so far the old machines have survived until replacement...until today.
Found out yesterday that one machine would not boot into Windows, giving a "Windows Schutzfehler" or Windows Protection Fault during bootup. (Remember, I work for the German government). The best I could do was "Abgesichter Modus" or Safe Mode, until this morning. I figured out how to edit the MSDOS.SYS file to at least allow "Abgesichter Modus mit Netzwerk" or Safe Mode with Network Support. That in and of itself was a challenge, using a German keyboard whose "~" and "\" keys require STRG+ALT (CTRL+ALT) activation; I thought it funny that the German version of MS-DOS does not accept those added inputs from a German keyboard to produce those keys. Imagine using MS-DOS without those two??? Anyway, the file was edited, and now I am into Safe Mode with Network support. Except, there is no network support. Those drivers too have been deactivated and they can't be installed in this mode.
So here is my dilema: No burner, no network connection, and 183MB of files to backup with ONLY one 1.4MB floppy drive to do the work. Of course, I can't use the 1GB USB stick we have since that too requires drivers in Win98. (Windows won't take those drivers downloaded from Kingston's web site.)
So, am I stuck transferring 183 megs with some 131 floppies, or do I have some other option that I have not yet considered?
BTW, IT is not my real job here. It's just an added bonus for my employer. Meanwhile, the real program I manage is not being attended to!
