How would you tell the owner of a company you work for to upgrade to laser printers?

I currently work for a cell phone company. We specialize in re-selling T-Mobile, Sprint, Nextel, and AT&T. We currently print out all of our stuff with ink jet printers. I think it sucks, because we it costs so much to have to go out and buy ink ALL THE TIME. We also use a online activation service which requires a lot of printing to be done. I recently purchased ink for the printer about less than a month ago and it has already ran out. I don't mind shelling out my own cash for a cheap HP printer. But, how would I go about telling this to the big boss man without him getting offended or pissed. I'm sure we can afford the printers, as it would benefit us A LOT! Please help!@

easy - do him a little sreadsheet showing how much you are spending on ink jet cartridges, and how long it will take him before he recoups the cost of the laser printer.

make sure to include all of the consumables in each cost-of-owership projection, including drum replacement after x thousand sheets

tell him the cost per page will be a lot cheaper. only a few pennies compared to 20 or so cents. it lasts longer, and you can print faster 🙂. Hell pick one up for testing purposes and see how u like it 🙂 I am sure you may be able to swing some sort of deal.

Do a spreadsheet on the cost per page of each method, and tout the benefits of laser.. Ink doesn't run, printed media lats longer, etc...

I'm more than likely gonna pick up a old laser jet 6 or whatever HP. Bring it in and just let it rip. It is by far EXTREMELY faster than any ink jet I've ever seen.

Like veryone already said - a proposal/spreadsheet showing the cost benefits of a laser printer, despite the heavy initial costs of purchasing the laser printers.

Cost per page is where lasers really shine

For example, a Laserjet 4100 printer has a maintenance interval of 200K pages. C8061X cartridges are good for 10K pages at 5% coverage.

So for every 200K pages you would need:

20 toner cartridges ($110 apiece)
1 maintenance kit ($300)

That's $2,500 for 200,000 pages, or 1.25¢ per page.

Try doing that with an inkjet.

Oh, did I mention it does 25 ppm & prints at 1200 dpi?

The 4200 & 4300 should have similar costs per page, & print even faster (35 and 45 ppm, respectively).

Do this:

Start a graph of total cost vs page count.

Start off the laser printer at initial purchase price, the inkjet at $0.00.

Show where the two graphs intersect.

Look at the cost savings per page printed for using a laser over an ink jet. Then estimate how much printing is done in an average day at your office. Figure out how long it will take for a new printer to "pay for itself".

My dad was in a similar situation. He owns his own business, and does a lot of printing as he writes and evaluates grants. As a result, he prints several hard copies of the final report, along with countless copies for drafts. Originally he was printing all of it with an inkjet at a cost of around 10 cents per page. He would take his final reports and have copies made at a cost of around 10 cents per page. I helped him look into getting a laser printer, and he picked up an HP4050N with a duplexer for around $1000 (I am a hot deal master) a few years back. He absolutely LOVES this printer. When he decides to be done with the business, I'm going to try and buy it from him, because I too love this printer. Plus, I think this printer has already paid for itself.

I have a Xerox laser and a regular inkjet here at home. There is no comparison.

Also, add to it that a laser printout looks much more professional than inkjet. This is especially important for electronic type stores since it keeps away that ghetto image to the customer.

Oh, and don't forget to tell him that laserprinters tend to be a lot faster, so people won't stand there waiting for it to finish printing quite so often, and will be able to work during the time they'd otherwise spend waiting.

How would you tell the owner of a company you work for to upgrade to laser printers?
"Hey you ass hat, when are you going to get some laser printers around this dump?" is the way I'd go.

Hmm, maybe that's why I've never stayed employed at one place very long.... 😱
