How would you say this?

It depends for me on the entire number I'm giving.

I'll say 605 0312 as six-oh-five.... zero three one two. If it's the leading number I'll say it as zero. Oh by itself leading can sometimes be misunderstood.

Add both to the poll please.

Both actually.

If I'm lazy - Oh
If I'm trying to make it clear - Zero
When I'm not paying attention - If there is a 0 in the first 3 digits I say 'Oh'. If there is a 0 in the last 4 digits only I tend to say 'zero'.

ie:

25(oh) - 4627
322 - 46(zero)8
4(oh)3 - 23(oh)9

Just realized I do this too. But sometimes I use just zeros like if I'm calling ups/fedex and I'm feeding them a tracking number.

Running through phone numbers I generally say, I'm noticing I say "oh" in the middle of a group -- seven-oh-three, five-oh-eight -- and "zero" at the end -- one-two-three-zero, four-nine-zero. I don't have any numbers that start with a 0, so I don't know how I'd say that. Probably "zero" there too.

I've been 'naught' a lot more, recently, please add it to the poll.

Don't you mean 'aught like in 30 aught 6 caliber?

Nah, Brits (and others, I'm sure) commonly say naught in place of zero.

Is that right? I didn't know that.

They say it that way on Top Gear all the time, and they're definitely British on Top Gear.

i interchange them regularly, but speaking to engineers ill usually say zero regardless of position, since most are anal little girls about shit like that.

Have never watched the program. I have watched many episodes of "Are You being Served" though--which is a British sitcom.

lol nope, im a happy guy 99.2% of the time. i just like to bash on engineers, they give so much ammo for it. and ive had them correct some pretty silly things people say in meetings. and for the most part, one of the best features engineers can have is being anal about detail. thats their job lol.
