How would you rate the Swiftech MCX462 PLUS?

Swiftech MCX462 Plus

Pair this with a Panaflow M1A or even a L1A. Would this HSF combo be considered to be an optimal air cooling solution for an overclocked Tbred "B"? I may sell my spare Maxtor HDD to purchase this combo from SVC soon. Comments?

I am using the MCX462-BA (it's the previous version of the HSF) since my T-Bird 1400 and it cooled a XP1700+, XP1800+, XP2000+, XP2200+ and now a XP2600+. I have used Deltas and Tornado fans for heavy cooling but now it is running a Tornado at 7v (low noise) and it cools it just fine. It's a great HSF. Another one that you might try is the Thermalright SLK900. This two are top of the line in air cooling.

It is an excellent cooler. Consistantly rates at the top of the HS ratings.

HOWEVER, It is a pain in the @ss to mount. God help you if you like to swap out processors more than 1x every 3 years because you will rue the day you got the Swiffy.

I had one on my last combo, but just got so sick of trying to get it to seat properly etc. Finally sold it and got the SLK-800 and have never looked back! Besides, my SLK dropped the temps 10c (Swiffy=44c / SLK=34c idle)

good luck!

Thanks for the replies. Those SLK coolers are just soo massive. Do they mount securely for their size? I would worry about the cooler lifting up from the CPU, you know gravity is a real b!tch sometimes.

I think their latest revision (900) only mounts on the motherboard holes and that will keep it always in touch with the CPU. The former revisions I am not sure but I think they were attached to the socket.

the SLK-800 is fine as long as you don't move it around too much. they weigh a lot, but they also use all three lugs. while AMD's reccomended heatsink weight is pretty light, that is only for heatsinks that use the center lug only. the SLK-800U and the SLK-900 both mount through the motherboard, and don't have any problems with being secure.

The three lug system on the SLK-800 is as tight as Brittany Spears jeans! No problems at all.

I would never go back to a through board mounting system. Who wants to have to pull the MoBo everytime you need to remove the HS....

Thanks for all the input guys. But I got a good trade deal on an Alpha PAL 8045U with both a Panaflo L1A and an H1A included. I won't be doing alot of CPU or HSF pulling once I get this monster installed so that inconvenience won't affect very much.

Now, what'll I do with the Coolermaster HHC-001 that is going to be removed from service?
