myself and my friend are into computer animation, and we need to get at each others files at all times(we can't be at each others house all the time- distacnce). We both have dsl connections, how would we set up a network. Is it even possible.
There are several ways to go about it. Lets look at some options and see which one looks better for you.
1) If you're both running windows XP you can allow someone to remotely login to your desktop and grab whatever files they need. This would be a fairly easy solution but use it with caution if you're working with sensitive data.
2) If one of you has a spare machine pick up a copy of Windows 2000 Server, I believe IIS (internet information services) has some sort of collaborative software that can also allow filesharing. Don't quote me on that one though as I haven't really messed around with it too much.
3) As was suggested before you can setup an FTP server on one or both of your machines. If you're using XP then you already have a built in FTP server. You can install it through Add/Remove programs.
Keep in mind that both your DSL connections are probably capped at a fairly low upload speed. This means that if you're working with large files the transfer rates will be far from optimal. I'd guess you'll probably average around 40-55k/sec with DSL on the upstream speed.
Me personally, if the data was not sensitive, I would use a FTP server. It's cheap (free ones available) and relatively simple. If I needed a secure connection between the two then I would definitely attempt a VPN.
If you want to go the ftp route in favor of vpn, I would recommend scp instead. At least you'll get some encryption...tho not as strong as a vpn appliance would give.
