How would you modify a DVD-ROM

I didnt know where else to put this so. I bought a Sony DVD-ROM drive from newegg. Guess what? It doesnt even play DVD movies. I've tested it because it reads normal CDs but it does not read any DVD movie i have from NetFlix. I even put the movies in another drive and they work fine. So.....

Now im stuck with a pretty much useless drive. Any suggestions as to how i can modify this drive so that it can read DVDs? I have other DVD-ROM drives laying around that i can use for parts.

I should add that i took the whole sony DVD-ROM drive apart.

Is there a way to identify any chip that might be preventing the DVD from picking up DVD movies? Maybe i could just remove one of those.

Turns out that shipping would cost more then it would to get a RMA.

So im keeping it. Any suggestions as to what i can do to it?

You are sure it's not a software issue? Can you rip movies with it? - like using DVD Decrypter (google it to download if you don't have it).

Do you have DVD playback software? PureVideo, Nero, etc.?

BTW, not Highly Technical :disgust:

Yep, Windows Media Player doesn't come with a DVD decoder. You need to install one, or use another video player that does.
