How would you go about driving customers to your site?

I have some guys who want me to help them with a website. They want to sell parts online and are a distributor for a few companies. What would be a course of action to drive customers to the site? google ads or something like that? any suggestions are appreciated.
 
Sponsor websites? Sent samples to websites for review?
AT does it with Newegg/Corsair etc. When they review a product, often they say "Thanks to xxx for suppling us with xxx" and other websites do it as well.
It's a way to get oyur name out there within the right community. Advertising is another way, obviously.
