how would you go about doing this?

see, i want to make a continuous looping film in my car. by this i mean, i want to install a camera in the dashboard, that looks out the front window... preferably in front of the driver's instrument panel. it would sit there, and continuosly record everything. ideally, i'd also want it to record engine temps, rpm, speed, and braking. but that isnt as important.

how would i go about doing that? im wanting to make a car mp3 player, and include this in that. i'd have like a 120 gig hard drive, and partition 20 gigs off for this camera to continuously loop and fill. is this plausible? is this even possible?

Look up homebrew Tivo's / PVR's

What you want is that exact thing, except it'll be an input from a video camera instead of from a tv tuner card.

I'm assuming you mean that you want it to record up to the full 20 gigs, then start writing over the oldest stuff, so you'll constantly have a record of your last few hours of driving.

You'll need to do it with a computer. 20gigs isn't that much for video unless you are compressing the heck out of it and is at a small viewing size. Video would require decent processing power especiall if it is highly compressed. What resolution (viewing size) video do you want to capture?

actually, i have no real clue. probably 400x300 or so... maybe larger. im just looking for something that would hold up in court. all it needs to be is like 3-5 minutes continuous spooling.

that is exactly what i intend to have.

the last few hours arent necessary, just the last few minutes... well, probably more...

Then start here
And here

Probably cops giving him unjustified tickets or being asses.

More people should do this 🙂. I sure as hell plan to when i get a car.

well, that, and accidents, and other similar things. it just gives me some confort having something recording. i'd also be installing a microphone behind a panel so that noone could see that they were being voice recorded, but they would be still.

this looks really interesting. i wonder if it could work with a mini-itx board, like the m10000 (new version)... dang, it needs 2 pci cards (i'd want a tv tuner and audigy 2 sound card in there... shute, how am i going to do this... hmm......
