Call the power company(ies). They should have an inventory of all the utility poles.

i don't think you get a lifeline during an interview :p

in a week...
easiest would be to call the power/phone co.

also i know in my area that the poles have little brass metal thigns stapled to them with anumber, or a number etched into the wood.

They put up poles every so many feet usually, multiply how many per mile times the miles of roads in San Diego, and you have a rough estimate?

Utility companies indeed have an inventory of said equipment. Of course access to such information does not fall within the freedom of information act and even access to systems with said information does not come without signing non disclosure agreements.

Your friend was given a week to answer an interview question?

That makes no sense, did he go into the interview, go through that whole process, and at the end the interviewer said, "hey good job I want to see you again next week but can you find out how many telephone poles there are in San Diego when you come back?"

no the question was more like

"if i gave you 1 week to solve this problem, how would you go about solving it?"
