how would you feel about a guy that says he doesn't like compliments?

skim milk

when people give him compliments, he tries to downplay it

Is it humble or insecure?
is this a positive trait in a guy or should he be basking in his own glory?

it's a waste of effort. also, it seems a bit neurotic if you can't accept a compliment. if the compliment seems sincere, then you can just say "thank you".

i think you can read the vibe correctly if you pay enough attention. pretty much everyone will try to downplay compliments because excessive gloating is just obnoxious, but how would you evaluate them under normal circumstances?

If they're arrogant and cocky around the clock, but pretend to be shy about accomplishments, then you know it's a farce. they're feeding off the attention being tossed at them, basking in whatever assumed glorification they're receiving. if they're naturally humble and easygoing, then there's a good chance them downplaying whatever they're being praised for is because so much overt attention can indeed a be a little disconcerting for someone who doesn't live for the spotlight.

so yeah, pretty straightforward

i usually down play compliments...

i usually respond no worries, sure, whatever, or thanks. i would consider my self humble.

nothing is more pathetic and depressing than giving someone a sincere compliment - and having them go "oh no, I'm really useless blah blah"... you might as well wear a sign on your head that says "I hate myself"

unless they're faking it to get more compliments.
