how would you drop off the face of the earth?

ever think about it? :D

sometimes, when work and home are totally stressing me out, I think about getting a name change and going work on a pipeline in alaska or something without telling anyone :) just, you know, pack up my laptop and some clothes in my car and hit the highway.

6 months of night? that'd be kinda cool.

edit: typos abound.

it would be fun to drop off for awhile, but i would have to let my friends/family know, so it wouldn't be the real "dropping off" deal.

You'd leave your job in an office to work on a pipeline during 24/7 darkness? That really makes no sense to me...

sometimes, I really dislike my job and I'd love a few months of not having to deal with the bs that fills my life. :) only sometimes. 95% of the time, I like my job and life a lot.

not that I'd ever actually do it, though. I'm too much of a coward. :p

I would go live in Colombia with friends of the family. They would tell no one if I asked and no one else could find me... it might work...

Have you read the graphic novel Ghostworld by Dan Clowse? You should, it is quite wonderful, and sort of explores some of the issues you raise

He'd have to drink about a fifth of vodka while smoking crack to simulate the low IQ necessary for that.

Be sure you don't have any skeletons in your closet because you might be the next Jennifer the runaway bride if you're attractive. Never mind! You're male. But really, I've thought about it occasionally. However, I would be concerned about the media after seeing what they did in the case of Jennifer. Your loved onces may report you missing, and God knows what's next if you're attractive.... Then again, you're a guy, so....

Being in constant darkness causes depression to a certain point i believe.

I used to work nights, & sleep during most the day.
I also lived in a bsmt. suite where not a lot of sunlight came in.

I was nearly always tired, & even with far more sleep, i still always felt tired, & was more depressed than usual.

I eventually went to working days again, & moved to a apartment with tons of sunlight...& i was a much happier person who didn't need to sleep for more than 7 or 8 hrs. to feel good.
I really believe there is a direct correlation.

I'd sell my stuff, amassing enough for the move. I'd then catch a flight to Europe and immerse myself into a different language and culture. I think about this way too often. Right now if pressed to disappear somewhere, it would be to gorgeous Northern Norway, also home of long winter nights. Who would think to look there?

As it is, I already live 500km (around 320 miles) north of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, and most of my friends believe I have dropped off the face of the earth. I could happily go further north.

I gave that serious consideration when I was going through my divorce.
I didn't.
I should have. Maybe it would have stopped my ex from calling me all the time.

Sell most of my possessions aside from clothes, digital camera, and laptop. Buy a plane ticket to Athens, Greece. Take a ferry to some Greek island. Then take an even smaller (fishing) boat to an even more remote Greek island with a population of a few thousand. Learn Greek, get tan, blend in.

Not even the IRS could find me.
