How would you diagnose this poweroff problem?

Yes, this involves the haunted PC. (i7-4790K, RX 480, one SSD and HD).

Lately, occasionally - up to once a day, or once in a few days - the system just powers down.

It totally shuts down - then the fan restarts a second later and keeps running, but no video signal.

I have to power cycle, which works. (Though an occasional oddity doing that is when the keyboard isn't recognized - which is fixed by another power cycle).

It doesn't seem related to the activity on the PC - it just happened while I was reading a web page without much else running, and it's happened while running a game.

It reminds me of when there's overheating, but that's not it - CPU temps are reported from 30 to 44 centigrade (edit - after running several more minutes the range is 29 to 51).

So, I'm wondering how to isolate the cause. It could be environmental (a short circuit? dust?) or a bad part, though I'm not about to just start replacing parts.

The power supply I guess would have to be a main suspect - a Seasonic M12II 620W - but I don't know if it's worth jumping to that theory, buying a new PS, and having the system rebuilt with it to test it.

Any other ideas how to identify a cause?

Yes, that's the reference to being 'the haunted PC'. I'm not sure how much catching up is needed, as the PC in the other thread had the MB and GPU replaced, and installing the different GPU drivers seems to have addressed the hang issue.

That info alone will save several people from suggesting those items be tested/replaced.

It gets better and better. Just now, the PC simply stopped recognizing the hard drive altogether - as in file explorer not showing the drive exists, only the SSD.

Restarted, and it's working again. Haunted.

It's getting worse by the hour, it happened again in less than an hour.

There's a little twist - it powers off, and then the fan starts; but I noticed when I power it off, wait a bit, and then power it on, it's not silent as normal.

There are two high musical beeps that is begins making repeatedly, even though it's not 'powered on', just the power supply is on. I never heard these two 'beeps' before, they're not Windows.

Then when I power on the PC, it's silent except for the normal fan sound. Don't know if this helps.

Sounds like, possibly, the BIOS temp alarm going off? Maybe heatsink not installed properly, or fan stuck in cable?

The fans are running unobstructed; yesterday, after a shutdown, monitoring the CPU temps a while had a range of 29 to 51 centigrade. Today they're 31 to 46. It ends after power on.

Could be a PECI alarm signal, if the CPU pins related to PECI are damaged, or the CPU's temp sensor is damaged. Either way, it sounds like some sort of BIOS alarm, which is nearly always temp/heat related. I don't know if Asus boards also alarm for power overvolt/undersupply or what.

They're sort of musical beeps. dee-doo, dee-doo, dee dee dee-doo. Wish I could identify what they are about.

This monitoring program cpuid shows a lot of info including temps and voltages...

Interesting. Is that a POST code, or a warbling? It could easily be a BIOS alarm, look it up in the manual.

Or... is a key being held down? Got some junk sitting on a keyboard?

I don't know about a post code or warbling. I can check the manual but I'm not sure how well these sounds will be documented. But CPU temp has a peak of 55 now.

No key held down - again it's only after a shut down and the PS is turned off and on, with the PC not powered on, that it happens, ending when the PC is powered on.,

Nevermind the beep thing, I found that it was actually a tablet plugged into a USB port. Unplug that, beep gone.

PC worked all day today in light use/Civ 6.

Started overwatch, and a 'competitive match'. Within about 2 minutes, system shut down. Don't yell ah ha yet.

Restarted, then played for another hour (in the more casual games, but same PC load). Hasn't crashed in a few hours again.
