That's the nice thing about the term significant other. It's a nice way to CYA and not put your foot in your mouth. If you don't know if a couple is married or not, you can just say you and your significant other and not offend anyone (except the incredibly anal).

It's sorta like the term "Ms." It covers both married and unmarried women (or in this case partner).

I jokingly refer to my girlfriend as my future ex wife. I alway get a smack when I say that. :p

Think I got it now. I used it once and just about got pwned by this person who emphatically insisted that they were *MARRIED*. Like you said, incredibly anal.
