How would you classify these bands? Indie? Powerpop? Neo-punk?

I've been listening to a bunch of "new" music lately--stuff I never listened to before but friends have recommended. I'm trying to figure out what genre of music they are, because all I can come up with is "Happy Emo". None of it really sounds emo, but the band members all dress the same--messy hair, eye makeup, lipstick?? (yes, they're all men!!) I don't really care for their sense of style, but I like the music.

So how would you classify these bands???

- Hellogoodbye
- Motion City Soundtrack
- Relient K
- Rooney (actually I've listened to them for awhile, but they sound similar to some of these other bands.)
- Bloc Party
- Editors
- Panic! at the Disco
- The Vines
- VHS or Beta
- The Killers
- Fall Out Boy (ok I don't really listen to them, but for reference purposes)

You are listening to some VERY good music. Panic! at the Disco is by far my favorite band at the moment. Listen to some The Academy Is... also. Basically anyone Pete Wentz (Fall Out Boy creator/guitarist) signs is pretty good.

Some are punk-pop and some are indie rock but those genres can blend together at times. They are not Power-Pop.

See, that's way too broad. I'm looking for a subgenre that identifies "happy-sounding/upbeat" vs. "screamo/disturbed/crying" music.

Yeah, I thought powerpop was supposed to be 'softer' and more lyrical, with less riffs/chords or less drumkit work.

The Bay City Rollers are Power-Pop. So is The Knack and The Romantics. There is a lot of new Power-Pop too.....I have a good sized collection of Power-Pop. The bands you listed lean more towards the punk/alternative side.

I guess what we're dealing with now is a mix of everything that does not fit into rigid genres anymore. Take Panic! for example:

The lead singer sounds emo and at the same time, the music is punk and pop with some techno and the their style (in terms of outfits) is indie.

Kinda like what happened to country when they turned pop... instead country sucks now compared to the early and mid 90's.

if it's got fall out boy in it , then it's emo

If you want to listen to good "powerpop" pick up an album by Van Go

If you want to understand what PowerPop really is, then explore the roots. Any band that professes to be in that genre worships Big Star. Until you listen to them, and their progeny over the next two decades, youre just wasting your time trying to differentiate from amongst that list of mediocrity above. I like Rooney fairly well, but they really aren't more than an average band, at best. Some of those you listed are just flat out horrible.

I love Big Star, but when I think of powerpop I think of Badfinger, or the Raspberries, or Cheap Trick.

On that list I like the Vines and Bloc Party. I think Franz Ferdinand and the Kaiser Chiefs should be on there too. I love the Subways.

Dunno how old the OP is, but anyone who likes the Editors and Bloc Party really should check out Echo and the Bunnymen, and Gang of Four.

The only one that I recognize is Reliant K. The guy that gave me a cd of theirs called it Christian Punk.

Agreed, I don't know if these can be classified in one particular genre. I really like motion city soundtrack and fall out boy.. only heard one of The Killers' songs but I liked it.

Isn't Bloc Party just plain old mainstream alternative? They sound that way to me.

I'm only 29, but still pathetic. I have heard of the killers, fall out boy, bloc party, and VHS or Beta only.

Agreed. Reliant K is Christian, so you can throw that tag on there as well. That is very good music indeed. I'm not a huge fan of bands that have made it big, so if fallout boy was off that list it would be a perfect list.

For reference I'm 22.

Out of curiousity, can I ask why you're not a fan of bands that have "made it?" Is it because of the overexposure, or the "manufactured" sound that some people hear? I ask because I've had "Sophomore Slump or Comeback of the Year" and "Sugar, We're Going Down" on repeat for the last 3 days ;)

Like I said, I don't really listen to them but I included them for reference.

Reason why is because a lot of the bands I listed are linked on purevolume.com, and many are signed by Decaydance/Fueled by Ramen (which I guess is linked to Wentz and Fallout Boy.)

I do listen to Franz Ferdinand, Arctic Monkeys etc., but their sound is a bit different. I would classify those bands as more "3rd-string British Invasion"--I dunno. I guess maybe "The Bravery" can be on that list--I really like them and they have more of that synth-pop sound that Franz doesn't have.
