Best idea of the thread.

Someone with good musical skills would have it easy if they can get in with a decent sized church.

Just play all the stuff you learned as a kid and you'd be world famous. And every year for centuries there would be Princess Ida festivals held all over the world where people would worship your music. (although as a female you would have to find some guy and let him take all the credit)

Hellz yeah. I'd just bring back the scores for all of Beethoven's music and scratch out his name, replace it with zinfamous.

I'd be, like, 3 centuries ahead of my time!

it would be sweet. The only problem, I don't think they had pianos in the 16th century. it was only harpsichord, right? :hmm:

I suppose I could go with Mozart, but that would be lame. Beethoven was badass.

And I wouldn't have to worry about playing or conducting anything--I could just explain it away as the blessed music of God--given to me by divine provenance. I would be considered the greatest genius ever, spend my days laying back and just wait for the bitches to line up.

I don't think the music thing would work unless you "composed" pieces that were from within a few decades. Music is one of those things that people need to get used to. Do you think you could bring present day music back to 1950 and it would be popular? Of course not. The same applies further back in time. You can't just whip out something completely different from what they've heard before and expect it be accepted. It would sound like complete dissonance to them.

I need to think on it some more but I think one of the best ways to succeed would be in martial arts. This is something that has truly evolved, requires no technology, and would be in demand in the time period. If you are a good multi-disciplined MMA fighter, you'd want to start out by entering fighting tournaments or other planned fights where you can earn money and prestige. Eventually you'll get noticed and the local King will want you to train troops. Paradoxically, this might actually be one of the safer avenues as well. While a King can't always see the benefits of technology and science (and you would probably get out maneuvered by the other advisers), they can certainly see the advantage of a better functioning military.

Nah, just go to the town square and start belting out some Ozzy Osborne. They'll think you're Elvis.

Good point!

I bet a good MMA fighter could whip anyone one-on-one from that time period, even with the 16th century guy's strength and toughness.

I think a modern fighter with the benefits from today's nutrition, weight training and fighting techniques would annihilate trained fighters from that period.

How would you capitalize on your current knowledge if you were taken back to the 1500s (or whatever time period you want)?
- You can't take books or electronics back with you (just the knowledge in your head)
- Be careful, you might be labeled a heretic and burned

Do you know enough science, mathematics, economics, medicine, etc to live richly?
Do you know enough to rule the world?
Even if you know certain things, can you prove them to the locals?

If you know medicine, chemistry, engineering, etc, are the materials available for you to use?
Is the terminology the same back then as it is today?

These are the questions I ask myself when I am bored.
I am sure this has been discussed here before, but it's fun to discuss these things.

Did they have horse racing back then....I dont gamble however, you could make some good money betting on known upcoming events!...perhaps!

They did kill him. I think maybe you would want him to live then? While Christians did some effed up stuff during the crusades, they're pretty tame now. I can think of plenty of other people the world would have been better off without. Jesus isn't one of them. How about Hitler? Pol Pot? Osama? I'd take Jesus over those scum bags any day.

This guy is correct.

No pron? Go fudge your idea of past time travel. I would rather go forward to the year 2200 where we have hologram pron

who needs pron, at this point women are just a smudge above livestock in the authority chain.

Fuck yeah!

hmm you realize they had modern weapons starting at that time right?
The 16th century saw the first widespread use of the matchlock musket as a decisive weapon on the battlefield with the Turks becoming leaders in this regard. The first of these campaigns was the campaign against the Persians in 1514 under Yavuz Sultan Selim, or Selim the Grim. Armed with gunpowder weapons, his army defeated the Persians at the Battle of Chaldiran.[33] After his victory over the Safavids, Selim turned his attention towards the Mamluk dynasty in Egypt. The decisive battle of his campaign against the Mamluks, and the battle which highlighted the importance of the musket in the Ottoman military, was the Battle of Raydaniyah, fought in 1517. There, Selim outflanked the entrenched Mamluk artillery, and attacked the Mamluk forces with his Janissaries. The Janissaries, armed with firearms, destroyed the Mamluk army, armed mostly with traditional swords and javelins.[34]

Reference was made by João de Barros to a sea battle outside Jiddah, in 1517, between Portuguese and Ottoman vessels. The Muslim force under Salman Reis had "three or four basilisks firing balls of thirty palms in circumference".[35] This was estimated to be a cannon of about 90 inch bore "firing cut stone balls of approximately 1,000 pounds (453 kg)".[35]

After the death of Selim, he was succeeded by his son Suleiman the Magnificent. During his reign, gunpowder weapons continued to be used effectively. One important example, is the Battle of Mohacs in 1526. During this battle, Ottoman artillery, and Janissaries armed with muskets, were able to cut down charging Hungarian cavalry.

mainly, unlike in films, when two folks get on the ground, their mates rush in and start stabbing them anyways, unlike those 10 on one things in film where all the mooks stand back and wait their turn;)

I wouldn't capitalize on anything, just have lots of unprotected sex with multiple partners. "You know if you take a sheep intestine and put it over your dick, it'll keep you from getting women pregnant." Maybe that's all I would capitalize on.

Nonsense, being the inventor of sheep intestine birth control will get me plenty of tail. All I have to do is tell a girl "hey, if you have sex with me I promise you won't get pregnant." What are they going to do, sue me?

Last time I checked, what was considered the ideal woman back then was very man-like features, including small breasts :\
