Long story short: Previous PC's motherboard (Gigabyte GA-7VRXP) crapped out, and now I'm looking for the best way to still use the two PATA hard drives and PCI sound card I have with a new updated motherboard.
1. What YOUR PC will be used for. That means what types of tasks you'll be performing.
So I gather I still need:
Now the barrage of questions:
Any advice is much appreciated.
1. What YOUR PC will be used for. That means what types of tasks you'll be performing.
- General
Internet browsing
No gaming
Document writing
Listening to music.
- Less than $300, would stretch to $400
- United States
No brand preferences
- A few PATA Hard drives
PCI Santa Cruz sound card
CD-ROM drive
ATX Case, keyboard, mouse, monitor, speakers
- Yes, THIS one.
- Default system settings
- ASAP (replacing an older system)
So I gather I still need:
- ATX Motherboard
ASUS M2N-E AM2 NVIDIA nForce 570 Ultra MCP ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail
CPU
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+ Brisbane 2.5GHz 2 x 512KB L2 Cache Socket AM2 65W Dual-Core Processor
PSU
?
RAM
G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Retail
Video card
?
RAID Card
Rosewill RC-200 PCI IDE (ATA) Silicon Image RAID (0/1/0+1/JBOD) Host Controller Card - Retail
Now the barrage of questions:
- Will this combination work?
What PSU and Video card should I get?
Will that RAID card allow me to still use the PATA hard drives I have now?
If so, can I do an XP repair on the PATA drive so I can boot with it on the new hardware?
Or would it be better just to clone and repair to a SATA drive?
Any advice is much appreciated.
