How would the VP be selected if Cheney were to die?

Nonono.. you are all wrong.. if the VP dies, the President appoints a new one.. If the President dies, the VP becomes President and appoints a new VP.. if they BOTH die AT THE SAME TIME, then it goes through the whole process of the Speaker of the House, etc..
 
25th admendment, Section 2:

<< Whenever there is a vacancy in the office of the Vice-President, the President shall nominate a Vice-President who shall take the office upon confirmation by a majority vote of both houses of Congress >>

all the different scenarios of who follows who only apply if both President and Vice-president are dead or incapacitated.
