How would the U.S. Govt. react if another country started to colonize on the moon?

It's not like the moon can't be claimed for yourself. Think of it as manifest destiny, except not as harsh because no one is already there.

You think the U.S. would feel threatened? What if it's a country - hypothetically - that we're not friends with it.

I think the US wouldn't give a ******. But then again, I'm sure they could spin that right around and say that they're terrorists.. lol

about the only other country right now that has a chance at doing it is Japan...maybe kinda sorta China in a decade. If Japan does though, I'm sure it won't be from lack of participation by the US.

I thought it was more of a "US WAS HERE" type of thing.

According the the UN treaty, like Antartica, no country owns the moon. In response to the OP, this is already happening. It was China's growth in space exploration that is pushing our return to true space missions (e.g. moon, mars) and not this LEO crap we've been doing for the last 20 years.

Colonize for what? There ain't sh!t on there worth colonizing. The fuel required to take you to the moon is worth more than the moon itself.

First off, the US government would know about it before it happened. That is when they would take action.

But anyways, I can't think of a country that would go to the moon and colonize on it that we are not friends with.

My guess though, is that if another country, friend or foe, decided to colonize on the moon, the US would see it in progress, and either join them, or beat them to it.

I'll leave the P&N bait to P&N. I was just responding on the current legal status of the moon, it is NOT currently legally claimed by the United States nor was it as part of the Apollo project. Legally it's under the domain of the UN for the benefit of all mandkind. If you care to disagree, kindly post some links backing up that this is not the current state.

In the name of the Free World, the US would initiate a major off... defensive against the *terrorists* threatening world peace. First they would put an embargo in effect against the malefactor country here on Earth then they would simply occupy the Moon and call it *freed*. Then, to everyone's surprise, a new, democratic Moon government would come out from nowhere to assure the world that everything's back to normal, and thanking the US for its quick help. Here on Earth the *terrorist* country along with some random others in the vicinity would be quickly occupied, just to be sure. For some reason, the illegal weapon import from Moon would rise to the high heavens but the US just wouldn't find the evildoers despite all the desperate measures taken.
