How would the Adaptec 19160 be for an average home user that is using SCSI?

I currently have a couple of IBM Ultrastars on the way, and I need a controller to run them on. This one seems decent from what i have read and i can get it for 125.00 dollars. Can anyone give me a reason not to buy it, or a reason to buy something else instead of it. I am not looking to spend too much money. Also if these drives don't satisfy my need for speed, i may sell them and get one of those 15,000RPM seagate cheetahs. Would this car dalso support that drive as well. Anything else I need to know?

the 19160 is an excellent scsi card & will work excellently with the x15!
the only drawback is that you must be using a windows OS! 🙂

<< All I use is windows, at least in my main rig, I may be trying out Linux on another machine soon >>

Then it should work fine for you....

You must remeber that with the 19160, you MUST use Windows. It does NOT have linux(or any other OS) support at ALL. So IF you have a slight chance of using those other OSes, shell out another $60(?) for a 29160...

Another choice is the Tekram Ultra160 card. I have heard good stuff about it.

I can gte the 29160 for 185.00? I thought it was more then that. I doubt I will use anything but windows, it's all i know and this is only for a home rig.

You should try checking out the AT FS/T forums for a scsi card. I bought my Adaptec 29160 w/ LVD and 50pin cable from somebody in the FS/T forums for $130 about 1-2 months ago. BTW the Tekram 390U3W is also a good card, as I used to have one.

dang you got a 29160 for 130.00? I did find this one in the forums, and at 125.00 it's a good deal, but a 29160 for 130.00 would be better

While Adaptec doesn't release Linux drivers for the 19160, you can just use the generic AIC-7XXX driver and it works fine.

Well, if you plan to use SE drives along with U160/U2W drives then you should not get the 19160. It does not have an internal 68pin SE connector. If you ever plan to use it in an actual server board with 64bit pci slots then note that it is only a 32bit compatible. Also if you plan to use LVD hdd drives in an external case then note that this card only has a 50pin ultra external connector.

<< Adaptec 19160, 32-bit PCI, 160MBytes/sec data transfer rate, 133MB/sec system bus. One 68-pin for LVD SCSI and one 50-pin for Ultra SCSI internally. Externally one 50-pin for Ultra SCSI. Up to 15 devices can be connected. An ideal choice for Professional Desktops. Support for Win2K, Win95 & 98, WinNT 4.0. >>

Just for comparison here is the 29160:

<< Adaptec 29160, 64-bit PCI, 32-bit compatible, 160MBytes/sec data transfer, 266MB/sec system bus. This one also has an additional 68-pin for Ultra Wide SCSI internally and its external connect is now one 68-pin for LVD SCSI devices as opposed to 50-pin as fitted to the two above, and has a different cable kit. Up to 15 devices can be connected. Aimed at the mainstream Mid-range Servers. >>

So you say get the 29160. That sounds good, but I haven't seen any on the forums lately, and 130.00 seems like a dream price, i doubt I will ever find one for thta price again

Yeah there are about 3 for sale or trade, but none are under 135.00 and I don't think any have software and cable with them

Just to add another alternative: anything from LSI that fits with your devices, for example the 21040 ("naked" board goes for around $140 as per pricewatch).

Why LSI? I like the customer service (they usually answer e-mail within a few hours 🙂 ) performance is usually same or better compared to Adaptec, and they are cheaper. The cards I had where bullet proof.

Yeah if you notice I said I could get the 19160 from the forums for 125.00, that just happens to be the one I was talking about. But heck he guy i bought the drives off of just PM'd me saying he has a 29160 for sale for 140.00 with a cable. That sucks though cause he already shipped the drives.

that is the fun part of that forum, i have a hard time shopping there because i live canada.
but still if i can get a deal in there, i save around 30% plus the shipping plus the tax than buy the same thing here if the stuff i that i bought is in good working order.
the 29160 here is around 300 canadian.
