I have an Asus K7M and Slot A Athlon, I'm planning to overclock it a bunch but I want to have a thermal probe in there so I can make sure I don't hurt it.

What's the best way to attach the P2T thermal probe? I have the plastic casing part off my Athlon, but the thermal transfer plate is still attached.

The best way would be to get the tip of the probe touching the edge of the processor. Not super accurate, but not too bad either.

But it has to touch actual core. Touching the substrate around the core won't do anything.

I used a precision electronic thermometer to verify that there is only a few tenths of a degree temperature difference between the core and the heat transfer plate near the core. Just clean up the plate near the core and stick the probe down with the provided sticky tape and you ought to be fine.
