How would I know if a automotive paint is oil based or water based ?

I want to know whether my car paint is oil based or water based.

What is the best way to find out ?

I think nowaday all factory paint are water-based (better for the environment)

What I am more interested in is the paint they use in local body shop. Water or oil based?

It depends on the paint. If you can't find out by the container, check the MSDS for it.

Not sure, but in So Cal water based automotive paints can be shot in old style booths.
Paints like Imron can not even be bought here. Other paint require a very elaborate booth and filtering system=expensive....
In the right hands the w/b stuff looks good..

There's really no difference in the "look" of the paint... water based paint cures faster from what I remember because it uses a different type hardener... so sticking it in a freezer to keep it from curing so you can use the paint for the 2nd coat or something won't work.
