How would I go on about making a book I own into a .pdf format?

So yea, I'm assuming either way, it's just going to be a PITA to do, but I'm really interested in doing it - how do I go about it? Do I:

- Type it up as if I'm just using a word processor?
or,
- Is there a program that lets me do that if I just scan it in?

btw., I don't think this book is even available for sale in the US< so I think copyright issues are null - besides, I own the damn thing anyways, so no two words about it, yous!

Any help would be appreciated!

You would not want to cut up a book ... use a hand held scanner so you do not break the book
spine by bending it flat on a scanner bed ... just keep the hand scanner steady & in a straight line

And make sure you use good resolution & if you do not have something like Acrobat Pro 6 or 7
then you might wany ABBYY Fine Reader as an ocr reader utilty
