How would I go about reconnecting a 12v wire to a fan?

it should have 3 places for leads.

Red, Black and Yellow.

Red and Black is reversable. Meaning if you plug the red with black instead of red with red, the fan will spin backwards!

If you connect a red with yellow the fan wont turn on.

Red and black = +/- Yellow = RPM Sensor.

I see that, but the red wire came undone and the black one is still there. The wires are ?soldered? on under the plastic. I took the fan apart, I'll get a picture later.

There should be access to the solder points for the leads under the label (should fairly easily peel back - be careful so you can stick it back in place when you're done) on the spider side of the fan (the spider is the legs out to the sides of the fan that locates the motor in the center. Just strip a bit of the end clear of insulation and tack solder it to the proper pad on the little PCB on the fan.

Ah I see. Is it possible to use hot glue to hold the wire? I don't have access to a soldering iron.

The glue wouldn't be electrically conductive, because it's wax.

The hard part is the cynoacrylic, im assuming crazy glue, will also insulate the connection.

If you really dont want to fiddle with it, then just use industrial tape, or something that wont fall off or rip off when you attach the leds.

But i do recomend a solder. The top should only be if you really dont want to do it, and you really dont care.

20 dollar solder to fix a 5 dollar fan is rediculous.

Perhaps if you're using PMDC fans but who uses them in a computer? I built a custom MOSFET pure resistance driver for these type of fans to cool a projector house back in 1989. :Q

The typical commutator-less PC fan simply will not turn at all if power wires are reversed. Worse, if the driver circuit has no reverse polarity protection it may become irreversibly damaged and/or release the magic smoke. :Q

has anyone tested the actual conductivity of artic alumina epoxy. I can't remember if it's supposed to be non-conductive but, with aluminum in the name, I should assume it's not.

If you can't solder, then don't bother. AFAIK, there is no conductive adhesive out there that will guarantee a good connection. This is a very nice iron for small jobs and under $10.00:
http://www.radioshack.com/prod....jsp?productId=2062728 -. All you need beyond that is some solder. Get a little pack of fine gauge, rosin core solder while you're there at the Schlock.
