How would I get a computer installed in a car?

I am thinking about putting a computer in my car so that, well, I can have a computer in my car. I have worked out most of the problems, except the big one, how do I get power to it and the lcd screen? Now please nobody say "Just get a laptop" thats not what I am looking for.

Really depends on the system how you power it. There are other things to consider like surviving a crank and other little technicalities. Read for a week or two on MP3car.com and you should be set.

I built this years ago using an old pentium baby AT and a cheap inverter from the hardware store. Now with MP3 cd players under $100, there is really not need.

I built a system about a year ago for my Honda Accord. I bought a power inverter from Walmart. I ran the power switch up to the front of the car, hidden under the steering wheel, to turn the box on and off. I used Windows 2000 and Hibernation mode for quick start ups and shut downs (25 secs avg.). If you are worried about spikes or overtaxing your car battery, go with a SFF system (less power draw) and use a UPS backup. Those raise costs, however, so it just depends on what you want to put in it. I also used RC Car shocks to mount my HDD to absorb road shocks. Thas was the unique part of my build that I haven't seen anyone else use, and in about 9 months of using the system I never had a bad HDD sector. For the LCD screen, I bought one from a local auto sound store and mounted it in the console between the front seats. I ran a wire underneath the carpet to the fuse box under the stearing wheel, it only drew a few hundred milliamps. I used a RF mouse to control Winamp.

It is also good for GPS and other things.

I would almost have to recomend a DC-AC converter with the prices on those PSU's

They are inefficient and bring other problems with them. There is more to it than just an inverter if you want a nice system.

more CPU horsepower = more power draw and load on your cars electrical and also you'll need a fairly high grade DC to DC power supply or DC to AC inverter.
