How would I cut this? With what tool? (Building a speaker box).

I need to cut a 3" whole for the driver, then I need to cut around that hole but only 0.187" deep so the driver fits flush.

How would I go about doing this? With a router? Only probably i see using a router is getting the circle perfect. Would i need to make some kind of jig or is there an attachement or something you put on a router.?

Get a 3" hole-saw (that fits in your drill), and then get one of those "stepped" router bits and go round the edge of the hole you made with the hole-saw.

Use a hole saw for the 3" hole and a router for the lip.

Keep in mind if you do this and the sub is facing up (So you drop it in) its a PAIN IN THE ASS to get it back out once you've dropped it in.

The router method looks like the best way to go, but who uses decimals with inches? That's a metric thing.

the best way would be the aforementioned hole-saw, and then get a router bit with a bearing to keep in the right place and some sort of straight-cutting bit that will cut far enough into the wood from the bearing enough for the size of the lip you want...

Well, I suppose if you have some dinky little box in your trunk yeah, easy. My box, no WAY your turnin it over in the trunk. I have to jack it in all half cocked and sideways to get it to fit.
Yes, outside of the car its always simple. Just giving you a heads up for once its in the car.
Hence the simply Union solution always sucking in the long run.

Now that I got that out of the way, I need some kind of paint for the fnish.

I want a black finish like this.. But I don't know what kind of paint it is. All I got is "black textured paint".

I also don't know what kind of paint, or how to apply it. With a paint gun? A roller? Brush? Spray can?

Use a spray can to paint. Roller or brush will look like sh!t.

I think it would be easier to do this the other way around.

Cut the recess first using a homemade template, then run the hole in with the hole saw.


Once you cut out the center you lose your orientation. You would then have to chase the edge with a piloted bit that had just the right amount of overhang. If you have that bit, then........nevermind.
