Medium, shadows and other junk turned off.

Stick a GTX 560ti in there and it will run it on high easily.

here's a benchmark, your GPU is getting decent performance at 1080p. The image quality with your card may not be great, since you'll be running DX10. I think you would be fine running everything on medium.

LOL for the OP fine=shit.

But if you got the dough go for it. It will probably help a lot during destruction, explosion, and smokey type of situations.

How much are you going to pay for that GTX 580 ? I haven't seen big price drops on them yet with the release of the 680 already having gone by.

There are better cards out there at the same price point the 580 is selling for. Heck with the 580 @ $399, I would spend another $100 and get yourself a 680 over the 580 right now.

No, fine=fine. The GTX 285 is still quite capable, and considering that Battlefield 3 is a great-looking game regardless of what settings you put it on, he has no need to worry.

BF3 even has a couple of useless settings that make virtually no difference: "Terrain" and "Effects" or something along those lines. You can turn both of them to Low without missing a single thing.

Yeah you do not want to play BF3 with a 285. Unless you are running at 720P (you didnt list your resolution) its going to run horrible.

The 580 will run is "fine" for you. And in this case fine = good.

i was gonna get this one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127567

I do want to get the GTX 680 but my motherboard only has PCI-E 16 2.0, the GTX 680 is PCI E 3.0 spec, will have have a performance drop using a GTX 680 that is PCI-E 3.0 spec in my motherboard that is PCI-E 2.0 spec?

oh and btw im running at 1920x1080

2.0 vs 3.0 is essentially irrelivent. I would spend the extra $100 for the 680. $300 to $400 hundred video cards don't offer good value.

so with my PCI-E 2.0 mobo I would not lose any performance using a PCI-E 3.0 video card like the GTX 680?

I would hate to spend all that money on a video card and not use it to its full potential because of any bottlenecks in my system.

You have enough RAM for all titles out there and your CPU is still very good. Even if it weren't, I can't even think of 5 titles that would be CPU limited and BF3 isn't one of them anyway.

If you are spending the money, the 680 will play with the rest of system nicely. PCIE 3.0 won't matter for another year or two.

I ran BF3 for 4 months on a GTX 285 and an i5 2500k, it ran very smoothly and looked fine on medium. I have since upgraded to GTX 480 and can say that DX11 does make a big visual difference. Ive also found this cuts both ways, while it looks pretty, it seems its tougher to spot people through all the smoke and dust effects sometimes.

If a a high end CPU gets 40 fps with your card with a q9xxx series you will get about half the fps or at most 60% or so

I'm surprised no one has asked the OP what screen resolution they play at. That alone is going to affect the eventual answer.

OP, your CPU shouldn't bottleneck your system at any graphics settings/resolutions so long as you're on one monitor. The "weakest link" will be your GPU. I could see you getting away with playing the game at Medium settings at 1280x720.

I have a question on gameplay. I only got the game 3 weeks ago . But is everyplayer the squad leader. I have been for the last 2 weeks and I hate it. Everyone targets me no matter where I am at on map . At the same time I command the entire Team and all map points . Is this normal gameplay for everyones game?
