How will my X800pro handle Half-Life 2?

I have a x800pro 256mb agp, sempron 3100+, and 512mb ram. Will I be able to play HL2 @ 1024x768 or 1280x1024? I like good quality hi res and fairly good fps.

Of course it will. I was playing CS Source on my 9500 pro with 512 MB ram and Athlon XP 3000 and was hitting 50 fps+ at 1024x768, 2X AA and 16x AF, all high settings. And HL 2 is supposed to run easier than CS Source.

Slideshow. Upgrade to a GeForce 2 MX.

Seriously, do you need ego stroking, or do you just not check the main Anandtech site often? In all of the HL2 previews, all of the top next-gen cards handle HL2 easily at 1280X1024 and even 1600X1200, even with some AA.

The 6800 GT, X800 Pro and X800 XT are all good for 1280X1024 with 4xAA/8xAF.

My Doom3 fps on demo1 was only 51fps @1024x768 high quality and the timedemo seemed to sputter quite a bit.

I'm fairly confident a $400 video card will play even a brand new game well at 10x7. *Fairly* confident.

;)

Doom 3 is a special case (meaning slower on ATi than nV), but make sure you're running the latest driver (4.10? 4.11?), as ATi has improved performance with AA+AF considerably. Doom 3 may also be limited by your CPU, something you can confirm by checking Anandtech's CPU section for their Doom 3 CPU Scaling article.

Doom 3 is much more demanding than HL2. I can run CS:S adequately on my laptop, which has a mere Radeon 9000 Mobility with 32MB. It runs beautifully on the 9700 Pro in my desktop.

My 9800 pro runs the stress test like butter, this isn't a crap engine like Doom 3 :)

Maybe the tables will be turned and thats what people with Nvidia cards will be saying after HL2 :)

And to answer the original posters question it will run fine

Do you guys think I can run Doom 3 at 800x600x32 with the lowest detail settings with a 6800 GT? I mean it is only one of the fastest video cards out today, but I want it to run pretty smooth.

Gosh! I am not even concerned about my 9800Pro, and you're afraid your X800Pro can't handle HL2? And at 1024x768?!!

See previous statement. Check the Anand reviews - the X800 Pro is about 5% slower than the 6800GT in everything except Doom3 (and a couple of OpenGL games that run at >80 fps anyways).

Doom3 is a special case. It runs much better on Nvidia next-gen hardware (so much so that the 6800nu beats the X800 Pro badly, while the opposite is true in every other game at high resolutions with AA/AF).

Ooh, you're pushing it. Better try 16-bit just to be safe ;) . If you want those newfangled 32-bit graphics, save up for SLI!

How about a Radeon X800SE 128 mb card in a 3.2 Ghz Pentium 4 machine with 1 Gb memory? :D

Seriously, I haven't seen any benchmarks for this card and I've never ran them myself.

Depends on what settings are you gonna choose, my guess is since the 9800 Pro plays the game fast at 1280x1024 your card will run it aswell at this res with some AA/AF and it *might* run it at 1600x1200 no AA/AF.

You mean the X800 Pro is generally faster than the GT except in Doom 3? Well, I don't agree with that, the GT beats the Pro in most of the games except in FarCry and some other specific titles, so it's like 80% wins for the GT and 20% for the Pro.

I just saw a Radeon X800SE (pulled from a Dell 8400 - seems to be allot of that going on) sell on Ebay for $185! That is a pretty good deal if they run faster than a Radeon 9800 XT.
