How will DDR2 800 limit my E8400 OC?

I have 2 sets of OCZ2P800R22GK which is basically 4x 1GB sticks of DDR2 800. How much will this limit my overclock on my E8400? I know 4 sticks won't OC as good as 2. Should I step up to DDR2 1000 or 1066? I will be putting this in a DFI LANPARTY DK P35-T2RS. If I'm reading the guides correctly I won't have a memory divider like I do on AMD. This will be my first Intel rig since an Abit BP6 with 2 celeron 366's running at 550MHz.

from what i have read it will limit you to a 400mhz front side bus where the stock is 333mhz fsb. So you will be able to go up to 400mhz X 9(multiplier)=3600mhz or 3.6Ghz

It'll limit you to 400 FSB if (and only if) you don't want to try to overclock your ram. I'm not sure what the voltage/timing settings are on that ram; however, there is a fairly decent chance that you can get something working past 400mhz fsb. I would try overclocking with the ram that you already have, as you have already paid for it. See what results you can get...buy new parts if necessary.

I had the same experience and had to go to 1066 ram, the 800 ballistic just could not keep up with my E8400. You may get a bit above 400 and a 3.6 OC is ok but not where most E8400's go.

There are plenty of boards that will hit high FSB oc's. Just read reviews and look for one that has the features you want.

yah most good boards easily do over 400, and so do the E8400's. You just need to make sure your ram can do it.
like wuzup 101 says, go ahead and memtest the ram now at 460-500mhz. If it runs fine at the timings you want, keep it. If not go ahead and buy some 1000/1066 ram.

if your ram can take it you can go well over 400 FSB with a 8400

im runing 9x450, not a single issue in 10 months im running 2x2gh of 1066, but the limiting factor for you will simply be if the ram will play nice at that speed,

i was up to 9x445 on mine, that was the limit for my DDR2-800. anything higher and it failed prime instantly.

i did 9 x 515 on some 800mhz supertalent for a suicide run. had to set timings really loose like 6 6 7 26. That ram ran 24/7 at about ~462mhz 5 5 5 15

How much NB voltage did it take to get to 515FSB and on what board specifically??

I have my G.Skill DDR2-800 up to 445 FSB, 5-5-5-15 timings, 1.8 V. I haven't tried higher since 445 x 9 put me at 4.05 GHz.

Most decent DDR2-800 will do well over their rated speed.

Yours is 4-4-4, so you can loosen that to 5-5-5, & likely do DDR2-1000, or at least enough to avoid holding back your CPU.

You have memory ratios on Intel, but the lowest is 1:1.

If you want 4 GHz, you need 445 MHz for the FSB, & DDR2-890.

I'm sure your RAM will do DDR2-890 5-5-5 if you set it up properly with adequate NB voltage.

I would have sworn that the DFI P35-T2RS didn't like 4 sticks very much. I could just be remembering the wrong board, though. It may have been the 965P version that had so many problems with 4 sticks, when overclocking.

Well, my UT P35-T2R was a nightmare with 4 DIMMs, so i wouldn't be surprised if the T2RS version is equally craptacular...

Only one way to find out though.

That's what I'm hoping. If I loosen the timing I can hit 445MHz. Sure did like being able to go beyond 1:1 with AMD.

True. Usually I can post on OCZ's forums and they will tell me what timings to run. I just didn't get a very detailed response there like I'm used to. Usually they will tell me all the settings on my DFI boards. This time I was told to set NB voltage to1.4-1.45V and tRFC to 55 cycles. That was it. Of course that may be all I need to do. Hope I have better luck with 4DIMMs than it sounds like you did.

Running 4 sticks of Ram shouldn't really hold you back too much except at the very top end of your overclock. That being said, there are a few random boards that just plain do not like 4 sticks. Just read up on all the boards.
