How will a V4 4500 perform compared to a V5 5500?

I'm looking for a budget video card for my second system. It has a V3 2k in there now and I was going to upgrade to a GF MX. But after a few hours of LAN gaming with a buddy last night I can't stand looking at games without FSAA anymore. So will a V4 4500 run near as fast as a V5 at 1024x768x16 w 2xFSAA? Even if 800x600 runs smooth I think I would consider it. IF not, I have no choice but to go with another V5. But I was hoping to go the cheaper route.

aah no! The 4500 does 2xFSAA, and has no horsepower to do more. In fact, it doesn't compete well at the "budget" end. You can get cheaper AND better. The V5 is not much more nowadays, or get the MX which also does FSAA and is very compatible. Anandtech has reviewed them all.

The V4 is not worthy of anyone's consideration. Every single review I've seen of it shows it being totally crushed by cheaper competitors.

So, if you like to spend more for less and have people think you are nuts- V4 all the way!

MX is a better choise than V4-4500 if it's FSAA you want, aforementioned can push 4-sample FSAA without woes in most older titles if you keep the resolution at 800x600 or below. However, for 4-sample FSAA at playable speeds at higher resolutions you'll need to go for a V5-5500, GeForce2 GTS/Pro/Ultra or Radeon DDR. Out of these more expensive choises V5-5500 will give you the best FSAA quality and compatibility and GF2 Ultra highest usable resolution.

BTW, since someone is sure to jump on me for claiming the MX can do 4-sample FSAA at playable speeds, I have the following to say... On my SDR GeForce, which is slightly slower than MX, 4X FSAA is playable at following games I've tried:

Carmageddon 2: 640x480 (fixed), D3D, gaussian blur setting for best quality
Half-Life: 1024x768x16, OpenGL
Homeworld: 1024x768x16, OpenGL
Monkey Island 4 demo: 640x480 (fixed), both D3D and OpenGL
NFS4: 800x600x16, D3D
StarLancer (demo): 800x600x16, D3D
System Shock II: 800x600x16, D3D

Some titles have compatibility issues with nVidia's FSAA and many newer ones (Quake III, NOLF, Deus Ex...) are far too slow, but aforementioned "classics" work like a charm.

Read Annadtech's V4/V5 review using the latest 1.00.04 drivers. With the price of a V5 being so low and continually dropping it makes no sense to get a V4. The V4 was an underpowered card the day it was released.
