I have several computers at my office that have office xp installed on them. They need to be reformatted and have everything reinstalled, unfortunately the previous IT guy did not leave the cd's for ms office XP. I have the cd keys already but I just need the actual cd. Anyone know how I can get one? And does the cd key need to match a particular version of office xp, ie w/sp2, oem, etc?

I've searched bit torrent and came up with nothing and I'm sure if I did find something they would be precracked.

I don't think they can help since I wont be able to provide a receipt. All I have is the serial #'s.

Hmm, does your company have records of the transaction? I'm sure even a credit card statement would suffice.

Purchase another license of the same type - retail, OEM, etc. and use the different keys. MS won't give you another CD unless you can provide packaging, media, or a receipt.

You can get a receipt by contacting the store you purchased it from. If your previous IT guy used pirated keys you're screwed.

Otherwise call MS anyway, you may be able to work something out for you anyway.

I'll have to find out.

When was office XP release? If they purchased office when they built the systems (three years ago) I doubt they would still have the purchase receipt, infact the original IT person might have it or had it.

It's frustrating because they purchased the software legitimately but my only reasonable option is an illegal one and since this is a business I don't think that really is an option:(

Did you purchase it separately or bundled with the systems?

I could do that but then I'm buying something they have already paid for let alone an outdated program (in fact we will be purchasing one copy of office 11 to test).

I hope MS is very understanding....

I'm pretty sure it was separate since the systems were hand built by the IT guy. I just don't know where the cd's would have gone, he left the windows XP cd's and all the other system crap, just not office:|

If he did purchase it legtimately, there MUST be some record of the purchase, check with your accounting people. the IT department would not be responsible for making the actual payment for the software. Lacking this, I would go with the assumption that they were not indeed purchased after all.

I called ms and it turns out the key is illegal:|

I can understand why someone might use pirated version for home use but for a business it doesn't make sense.

ive seen it happen before. i hate when people do it on work machines...but im more annoyed when people do it to their home machines and give them to me to "fix" with bootleg software.
i just hand it to them and say "nope!"

They built and sold you a system. Charged you for the S/W. Never thought that you would check it out.
At $300+ for Office, that is a lot of pure profit.

My guess is that all the pc's are like this, 25 x $300 = $7500!!

I've talked to the owner and they weren't surprised and had told me when they hired me that they thought the previous IT guy was scamming them. Hopefully they can get some of their money back for it.

Now I have to figure out a cost effective way to get them legit.

1) Make sure that every S/W license on your systems are now legit.

2) Contact the vendors to see about purchase of a bulk license. You may get some relief being that it is an older version.

3) Check for licenses in bulk from E-Bay or some other legit distributer.
