On a scale of 1 being incredibly obscure to 10 being incredibly well known, how well known is the word 'tome'?
I'd say 8 when used in context.

People who think they can discern the meaning of a word accurately via context are morons.
100% of Dragon Age players are familiar with it.

Isn't context how we learn most of our words? Sometimes when someone asks me to define a word I'm using I have difficulty; I can't give a concrete definition, just use it in examples. At best I could come up with a vague definition.
Context can't help you learn the subtlety of definitions. Also, I can't tell you the number of times I've seen people get a word completely wrong because they thought they knew the word from context. This is the quickest way to make yourself look like a complete tool.

Actually I believe it was "foraver"."you will be trapped within this dense symbolist tome forever!"
