Hi

guys Im building a P4 machine for a friend and hes a bit on a budget so I will be most probably using the P4C 2.4
and I was wondering if it overclocks ok, pleae let me know what you thinks

Thank you
Dan

P.S. what HSF would you recommend for OCing this CPU ? not a very heavy one, because I know my friend will be very scared of a 700g HSF (just like I am 🙂 )

My buddy has his 2.4C @ 3.6C with 1.75V and a Zantec Aeroflow...he can post at 3.8 but his ram is holding him back.

According to Overclockers.com, the average overclock for a 2.4C is 3323 MHz. Mine hit 3Ghz no problem with stock cooling. I have run it at 3120 (stable) and 3180 (not as stable) with stock cooling as well, but I think my RAM and/or motherboard (IS7) is causing problems at higher speeds.

Unless you are going for an extreme overclock (say, over 3.2 or 3.3 GHz), I would just use the stock cooling. Several people report success taking their 2.4Cs to 3.3GHz and above with stock cooling.

I was wondering something, whats the temp increase on stock cooling ? I mean what was the temp at 2.4 and whats it now ?

Thanks
Dan

I had to up my VCore to 1.575, though many people do not have to up their VCore. Even then, at 3GHz with stock cooling and a 1.575 VCore, my temps are in the high 30's/low 40's at idle, and low 60's at full load. I never measured the temps at 2.4 GHz, though I imagine they would be low - mid 30's at idle, high 50's - low 60's at load. The chip is just a great overclocker. You will probably hit 3 GHz on the first try by going to a 250 MHz bus and a 5:4 memory divider (fixed AGP/PCI). If not, a little extra VCore should easily get you there.

I'd say the least you'd get out of one would be 3ghz (250mhz fsb)
Had mine to 3.2ghz stable, but have settled on 3.0ghz for now @ default voltage with memory 1:1 (DDR500) 2.5,4,4,7

If your mate's that much on a budget, you might want to consider an AthlonXP 2500+ and nforce2 combo.
The 2500+ is supposed to be a very good overclocker (3200+ speeds) and would cost a lot less than an intel rig.

I wouldnt really want it to hit 60, but I dont mind getting an aftermarket cooler to keep it in the 50 area 🙂

yeah Im very happy with what you guys say 🙂 and Id definetly want to keep the voltage at stock

yeah I know amds are running good, I have one right now and had a couple in the past, but he wants a P4

I really think they all can hit 3.2 or higher nowadays. Anything more is a nice bonus. Dont seem to require much to do it either.

Mine hits 3.0, and that is it! I seem to have drawn a runt (I'm creating a new thread on this).
