How well do these stablizers work?

You can achieve similar results from tucking in your elbows all the way, and using the other hand to stabilize side to side movement.

For $99, I don't think that's worth it. If anything, I'd get a monopod/tripod, since those are also useful for cameras.

They make a similar kind of thing for SLR cameras called the Bushhawk. Makes it more like a rifle stock and all that. For $100.... I dunno. I personally wouldn't get it. Don't the top of the line camcorders have stocks that sit on top of the shoulder rather than like this one that sits beside the armpit? Perhaps look for one that sits on top of the shoulder?

And just because it's made by Bogen/Manfrotto doesn't mean that it's great quality and design. I've got a monopod made by them that converts into a freestanding monopod and for such a simple concept and design they royally screwed it up.
