How well do slot coolers work?

I've had my V1000 for a couple of months and love it, but I want to get my cooling straight before I start overclocking. Has anyone had any luck with slot coolers like this AOCAOC
Will it give a decent extra amount of exhaust or does the extra fan noise outweigh the benefits. I really like this case--I just wish it had one more exhaust fan.

Thanks!

From what I have seen that slot cooler is very effective (see reviews on newegg). What are you looking to overclock though? Just looking to up your ambient temps?

Slot coolers arent very efficeint... you should invest your money into a good intake and exhaust.

I figure it's only $10 so it's worth it if it drops my temps a few degrees. I've got a Big Typhoon for my cpu cooler and just got a vf900 to cool my 7800gt

It probably wont drop your temp a few degrees.

I was going to put it next to my video card--I was thinking that once I put the vf900 in, the card would be cooler, but that area would have more heat buildup and this might help to exhaust it--no?

From my experience, slot coolers are not reliable at all. They either die on you over a couple of months or get really annoyingly loud. I also have a v1000 and felt the same way as you. What i did was drilled a 120mm hole into my side panel right in front of the gfx. My ambient temps dropped down dramatically and my cpu temp dropped about 4c.

Maybe I'll pass on it--I would hate to drill a hole in my case window, but I'll see what temps I get after I put in the vid cooler. I'm going to try one of these Kama Bay and see if that helps. What kind of temps are you getting (I've got an Opty 170 and BFG 7800GT as well). Also, how do you like your Ascends? I was down to those and Rockets for my HT setup and ended up going w/ the Rockets.

I use it on my video rig and because it seem to help with area cooling, I decided to put one in my graphic workstation. I didn't notice any sound emanating from them, so maybe I'm a little deaf.

It may be person preferences but i think my case looks a lot nicer with the 120mm fan grill (black) on the side.

Also, my CPU temp is 27c idle (i haven't been gaming so i don't really know my load) and my ambient is 33c. I think the biggest improvement with the mod was the nf4 chipset (42c) and my gfx temp (42c).

I loveee my ascends! At first i thought they sounded a bit boring (i used to listen to hiphop, underground, etc) until i got my s12 and now.. its perfect esp. in a small room. I'm just waiting until i move out and ill get myself a full 5.1 setup with some htm200s and a 340 center.

Anyway, good luck lowering your temps. If you care about noise and air flow and you havent already, check out some yate loon fans. My case is full of them and it sounds like a dell!

//edit check this out if you're looking at that kama bay. Text

if u already have a vf900 and a BT, theres something obviously wrong if your temps are still high, i have the same case and a 4800+ and a x1900xt cpu idles at 33C load at 44C after 2 hours of gaming. gpu idles at 45 load at 70C. its all about proper airflow, and ambient temps, i leave my window open and i'm at upstate new york

QFT! Plus, IMO, kinda useless for an SLI setup.

My temps are ok--I just wanted to see how cool I could get the case before I started overclocking. Plus, I had room by my video card for the slot cooler to get rid of a little more heat if they worked--which I'm starting to think they don't!

I saw that, but it seems the Kama Bay might be better since its got a 120 instead of an 80 on that one. I've already got a couple of Yate Loons installed plus an extra one if I don't like the fan on the KB--They're great. Great airflow and almost no noise.
