How well do fan adapters work?

I've got a heatsink with holes for a 70mm, but I want to use one of my silent 80mm, 90mm, or 120mm fans because no 70mm fan meets my requirements.

I can buy a fan adapter, but I was wondering if that would cause any problems. Seems moving the fan up a bit would help eliminate the dead zone right at the center, but, if there are no drawbacks, I wonder why everybody isn't using a 80>120 adapter with undervolted 120mm fan to get super cooling at near silence.

Where did you located a 70mm-80mm or 120mm adapter?? I've been hunting for one, but didn't find any.

SVC has a 70>80 and NWCA and Directron have 70>90s. Haven't found a 120m, but I haven't looked much.

Adapters don't work so well for blowing (back pressure - the greater the step, the more BP), but great for sucking... For example, on my compact microATX case there are only mounts for 60mm fans on the back, so I mount a 60-80mm adapter to the OUTSIDE of the case - I call it my "Turbo Exhaust" (r) (TM) 2003. It works and looks great (but probably only to a hardware freak c'est moi) with a metallized "chrome" adapter and fan... All aluminum would also look great, but that gets expensive.
