How well do engine immobilizer systems work?

I am planning on getting a new Toyota Highlander and since this is the first time I had purchased an expensive vehicle, I was wondering how much I can rely on its security system? I was also planning on purchasing the auto lock. My friend had her Honda Civic stolen. She had the autolock but the theives removed her brakes and drove the car without any pedal brakes, only used the emergency breaks. She recovered her car smashed because the theives I guess could not drive the car well. What would you recommend to keep the car safe at a reasonable cost? Thanks in advance?

if ANYBODY wants your car, they will steal it by towing it

you need an alarm, backup batts, sirens stuff like that

they can always run your batteries out by setting off the alarm and just waiting for the battery to drain

if all you want is for them to not be able to steal your car, auto immobilizer works well

if youwant to protect mods, you're pretty much SOL, you can do alot of things but it's not fool proof

i plan to get the clifford avantguard 4

Anything that make it conclicated to steal would help

eg autolock ..pedals
The club ----steeling wheeling
alarm,

I know that they can be defeated but the more time it takes the better

they will likely pass it up for a easiler target.

w/ all that said, it they want, its theres nothing is going to stop them

Well, I can tell you that the immobilizer system on the newest Hondas has a transponder in the key. If the transponder is absent, the fuel pump is disabled. Futzing with the brakes will do no good. Maybe they can put it in Neutral and try to push it away :)

Of course I'm sure thieves can get devices to guess the transponder codes. Nothing is foolproof. If someone wants to steal a car badly enough, they will steal it, even if it means putting the whole thing on a flatbed and dragging it away (as was already said).
