How well can a Celeron handle HL2 or Far Cry?

Be interested if anyone knows how much of a hit you'd take running today's games on a Celeron. Assume you're using the same motherboard, maybe socket 775 with PCIe and a 6600GT and you pop out the 2.8 GHz Prescott and put in a Celeron D 2.8 w/533 FSB....how many fps would you expect to lose, playing at reasonable quality (800x600, no AA)? An academic question, I doubt many gamers are on a Celeron.

Would the drop from 800-->533 FSB be the main culprit, or would other factors play large parts too?

no the main drop would be because of cache, i think. i remember going from a 128kb celeron 2ghz to a 512kb cached 2.26 p4 and being amazed at the results - 2x 3dmark score, smooth Ut2004, etc :)

the celeron d's with 256k would clearly not be THAT bad, but id say maybe multiply your fps by 65% when going from a prescott to a celeron D (100 fps becomes 65) - but that is pure speculation ;)

i think it would work ok. Dont expect a drastic drop in performance, but realize that you probably will notice a difference in games. I would imagine that it wouldnt be 65% of the performance, but maybe rather 70-80%? I'm really not sure, but i dont think it'll be that bad.

BTW, why are you taking out a 2.8 prescott for the celeron?
