I came across this wall and I'm not sure how it was made, it looks like a photo and painting fused together.

They look like photos, I think the only 'painting' appearance is due to the textured surface it's on.

Even if that wall was smooth, I'd question how it was applied. But with that textured surface, I'm even more baffled.

Has anyone developed more simple, modular setups for this? I've seen custom built wall-painting systems but they'd be too complicated and costly just for the sake of doing random neighborhood walls.

CNC spray painting machine? Is there such a thing? Sounds like it would be the most logical way. Either way I don't imagine this was done manually.

Could be a printed film applied to the wall.
That crossed my mind, but I couldn't understand how a (giant) photo film could be applied without lines or creases on a surface like that. If it were smooth, sure...it'd be like applying the film or paper strips on a billboard with adhesive.

Good point, maybe it’s a photo realistic mural. Use a projector to sketch in the image and then paint it.

what's that tacky stuff people used in the 90s to put photos of their loved ones on cake tops? probably a similar film.

Reminds me of a what happened to us about 20 years ago. This was when the 3D posters just came out and were big. My wife and I were looking at them and I asked my wife, I wonder how they make them. A clerk in the shop heard us and came over and said "they make them with computers."
