How Viable Is This Route?

As of right now, I am holding back on making a purchase (of a new computer). I plan to most likely after May 11 (which is coincidentally when I take my two AP tests and is my birthday :|).

With that said, is getting an E4300 now and Q6600 a viable solution?

If I were to follow this route, I would most likely not upgrade to the Q6600 immediately once it becomes cheaper.

I know I'm leaving some stuff out so ask away!

It's viable for me, is it viable for you? Of course, I guess you realize that May 11 is only 14 days from today? Anyway, as long as you don't waste your money on a motherboard that won't support a Kentsfield, it wouldn't be that bad of a way to do it, IMO.

Yeah, its viable for me. But I'm not sure if that's a good investment. I would have an E4300 left over! :D

Anyways, I'm thinking about the DS3 and P5N-E

Although you said the S3 is pretty good, I don't think it has support for a Kentsfield (unless there is a BIOS update that I am uninformed of)

It doesn't support Kentsfield, like the DS3. It's because of the capacitors they use, not the BIOS (they can't carry the current that four C2D cores requires). If you already know that you'll be buying a Kentsfield, you should probably be looking at the DS3 or the P5B-E, unless SLI is also in your future. Of course, nearly every one of the Asus boards are good, if you can afford them.:D

Hmm...quite interesting...

I shall learn from this revelation!

I guess I shall take this path then!

Thanks myocardia!

But wait...

You're saying that DS3 doesn't support Kentsfield but you're telling me that if I choose to get a Kentsfield, I should get a DS3 or P5B-E (or other SLI variants)? This does not compute! (Head explodes) :D

Oh, okay! Hah!

When you said "It doesn't support Kentsfield, like the DS3", that kind of threw me off a bit.

Thanks for clarifying!

I'm considering making the switch to Core 2, and as such, will need to buy a new mobo and new RAM (moving from socket 939). I thought about going all-out and buying a Q6600... but that's $550. Not many apps will take advantage of the extra cores (except Supreme Commander, so I hear) so I've since switched gears. I think what I'll do instead is buy an e6600 now for around $250, then later this year when Barcelona comes out and Intel does their price drops the Q6600 will be down to $266 - I will still spend the same amount of money overall, if I decide to wait. This will also make it less painful on the wallet to make the switch, since I'll have to buy the RAM and mobo now.

Futhermore, if I decide in late 07 that I want something more powerful/better than the Q6600, I'll have the option to splurge on a new 45nm Intel chip, and not feel burned by replacing the quad core chip I bought months earlier. But if I decide I want the Q6600, the only thing I've lost is not having used it from now till the next price drop.

Its interesting to note that the am2 socket of the amd seems a little more upgradable than the intel path since it will support Barcelona chips... thats my dilema right now which 1 to choose... since intel 965 boards will most likely NOT be compatable with Penryns... only with the current quad cores... and the thing is we dont know if barcelona is worth taking this route or not :)

Also does this new board DFI Infinity 965-s support currect quad Kenstfield ??? somehow i like that board

I don't know what you're talking about, because the S3 fully supports Kentsfield.

DFI 965P is nice for Kentsfield, otherwise I would go for P5B-E+, P5B-Deluxe, and if you have the money to spend buy P5B Premium (all solid caps) or Commando (all solid caps).

Depending on what you have for a system now, you could buy a cheap throwaway CPU (like a $38 retail boxed 2.8ghz, 64-bit Celeron - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819112205) pair it up with the Gigabyte P965 DS3 or DFI Infinity P965 board plus the 2 gig G.Skill DDR2-800 5-5-5-15 kit and then wait for the price drop on the quads this fall...

Otherwise, buy the e4300 retail boxed now and just sell it when you get the quad to recoup some cash.

If it were me, and I had a viable working system, I'd just hold on to my cash and buy everything together when the quads came out to ensure compatibility. But that's just me... :)
