Let's put it this way.
To import an old-style VW beetle (but built brand new) would cost more than buying a new beetle.
Yikes.

There has got to be some kind of exemption though as I've seen some pretty exotic cars with the driver on the wrong side!

My understanding is that with loopholes in NAFTA it isn't too hard. There is a person on Audiworld (usually in the S4 forum) that imports RS4's by way of Mexico.

If the model is not sold in the US and has not been US crash tested, you must supply 2 or 3 (can't remember which) cars for the gov't to use in crash testing too. That's in addition to having the emissions system brought up to US specs.

ZV

EDIT: Apparently, that rule has changed. I was going by an old R&T article that was talking about how to import non-us-spec sports cars. In any case, you've got to verify that the cars meet US crash requirements and if the manufacturer can't certify the car then I think that the only way to certify a car is to actually crash one that is identical.
