How tough are today's HDDs?

I ask this because today while upgrading a sound card my grip of the case slipped and it went bang! on the marble floor. The midtower case fell down about 1 foot high and sideways. I have 3 HDs in it - 2 hitachi SATA Raid 0s and 1 WD 120JB. booting up a few times after that there seemed to be no problem so far, but a while ago I rebooted XP and CHKDSK found some invalid index or something...

Should I worry about this and prepare to RMA, or are HDDs these days tough enough to withstand these kind of shocks?

i would think that they are fine unless you drop them while they are running

they can handle a lot of gs static

I've dropped a few HDDs and even a graphics card or two. THey all still work just as well as they did before.

They're pretty resiliant(sp).

As long as they off, not powered on, and land on carpeted flooring anyway.

We had 2 Dell servers that fell, while they were running, when their shelf gave way - about 3 feet to another counter - they just kept on running. One had a piece of the case broken off. They are still running - this is now over a year later.

When I was working at a computer place, this lady brings in her computer and ask if it can be fixed or does need to buy a new one. You should have seen the tower, I wish I had taken some pictures of it to show you. She was on on the computer chating with some friends, when her old man comes home after a hard day drinking. Guy just goes up to her, grabs the tower and pulls on it walks to the balcony and gives it a toss. It hit the ground with such force that the Duron and the Heatsink came off and out of the socket. She had two sticks of 256Mb PC133. One stayed where it belongs and the other came out in two pieces. Good thing she had onboard everything. I still after 2 years can't figure out how the monitor plug came off the board though. She had to buy a new case (tied to straighten the old one but it still looked a little banged up) and a new Processor (lost some pins) and a Faceplate for the CDRW (only needed cause she didn't want white burner and black case). Hard Drive worked like it did before the toss, although the power was stopped just before it went. She was lucky it landed at the back corner of the case opposite the motherboard

You should call and make sure that the RMA policy covers dropping the drives. I doubt it does.

Hard drives can take a LOT more beating inside the case. Dropping a naked one on the floor will cause problems...

Cheers!
